were, but there is a sad want of regula?

waa the rule in the winter months in?
stead of the exception. We then had
sleighing in December, n, thaw lin Janu?
ary, and our coldest weather in Februa?
ry. Now an inch or two of snow; falling
perhaps twioe or thrice during the win-;
ter, and melting twenty-four hours after
its appearance, only exasperates the
lovers of sleighing; the old-fashioned
January thaw delays its 'coming until
February, while in March we are Bare to
have the coldest weather in the year.
The steady sommer heat, lasting from
June far into September, is only a ?tradi?
tion. We have a few days of intense
heat in July or August, but the rest of
th? sommer is hardly warmer than th a
May days of the last deon do. It will not
do to say that the olimate is growing
colder, for our winters are plainly less
severe than they formerly were. So,
too, the ohilliness of sommer contradicts
the theory that tho olimate is growing
colder; while the utter absence of any
sort of regularity in tho changes of the
weather has received no explanation
whatever." The growing mildness of
that climate was first accounted for upon
the theory that the Qulf stream was ap?
proaching nearer to the coast, but un?
scientific sea captains say that it is 100
miles farther East than formerly. Heneo

non-plased, and totally unablo to ex?
plain away a warm February and a freez?
ing March.
