RICAN DIAMOND FDJLDS IDENTICAL -WITH THE OPHIH OF THE BD3DE?-Dr. Peter? mann, the geographer, in a letter to the Ostsee Zeitungi expresses himself satis? fied by the latest report of the German explorer, Herr Car Manch, that the dia? mond fields in East Africa are identical with the Ophir of the Bible, from which King Solomon is said to have oonveyed gold and ivory and precious stones to Jerusalem for the construction of tho temple. The whereabouts of the anoient Ophir has lone been a disputed point. The Portuguese, on taking possession of Sofala, invested that colony with the Biblical oharaoter. Legends were af? firmed to be current among the natives that the rioh gold mines and the build? ings of which ruins were still visible owed their origin to the Queen of Sheba, and Lopez even asserted the existence of ancient documents proving the removal in anoient times of gold and precious stones to Jerusalem. These assertions cannot, however, in Herr Petermann's opinion, stand beside the discoveries made in our new colonies by Britton and Manoh, Merensky and Grutner. Zim babye ii the plaoe. Its neighborhood is rich in alluvial gold, precious stones and diamonds. .It possesses ruins of exten? sive piles of buildings, the structure of which shows them to bo of unquestiona? ble and remote antiquity. Ornaments and instruments are still found that could not possibly have been made by the natives, but might well have been left there by Phoenicians. Three days' journey from Zimbabye, similar rmuB have boon found, and the surrounding country is rich in all that favors agricul? ture. The present inhabitants have been in possession only about forty years, and they regard tho ruins and relics with a certain awe, due to tradition, which in vests thain with a saored oharao? ter. The geography of the plaoe tallies admirably with the indications given in the Bible. Phcenioian vessels would naturally sail along the Eastern African coast for the Bed Sea, and proceeding by this route they would be about three years coming ana going, as stated in thu Bible. Herr Petermann.concludes with a cut at the "practica! sense" of the English, who, "with the most naive coolness," have annexed the valuable territory. But, on the other hand, Dr. Peter? mann's theory is flatly contradicted by Herr Kiepert, a no less competent au? thority on geographical questions, who protests against the revival of a contro? versy which has, by common consent, long been regarded as closed, for the "land of Ophir" has, in his opinion, conclusively been proved to be situated in India. The words used in tho Old Testament to denote the various articles 0 ir ried thence to-Jerusalem, viz: gold, ivory, peacocks, monkeys, &c, are in? disputably of Sansorit origin, and the name Abhira has been accepted as cor? responding even etymologically to the "Ophir" of the Jews. The distance tallies porfeotly with that indicated in the Bible, and, moreover, it is a recog? nized fact that the Phoenicians traded largely with India, whereas their com? merce with the African coast, despite Herr Petermann's ingenious surmises, must be admittod to rest wholly on hy? pothesis. The anoient ruins found at Zimbabye and in its vioinity are no proof at all, for where, asks Herr Kie? pert, have similar ruins been found owing their origin to the Phoenicians? Bent on making money, the Phoenicians did not caro about raising elaborate and costly edifices, which they probably con? sidered useless waste. What Phconioian rnius there are, are in a very different style from what Herr Mauoh desoribea as being at Zimbabye. In conclusion, Herr Kiepert condemns the evidence of traditions about the Queen of Sheba as altogether too flimsy to bo seriously brought forward. If evory Buch tradi? tion woro to be aooepted as conclusivo, there would not be a city in the whole East which might not claim to be "Ophir." for tho mystical and mythical records of that wealthy queen aro ac widely spread as those of Iskendor Dhulkarnein (Alexander tho Great) oi those of Semiramis.
