On the strength of the excitement
lately oeeaeioaed ihrongaont the South,
by tho announcement that rebel cotton
bonds and "shinplosters" might soon
have an inoreased marketable value, an
enterprising ehoe-maker at Nashville,
Tenn., caused an advertisement to be in?
serted in the Banner, to the effect that be
was prepared to give .seventy-five cents
"on the dollar" for old, and fifty cents
for new, issue of Confederate money.
The offer proved so tempting that the
street in front of his store was crowded
to exoess on the following morning.
Old men and old women from every pnrt
of the surrounding eountry were on hand
with carpet-bags and valises, containing
paper representing thousands of dollars.
The first man who entered the store had
a parcel of some $200,000, and his ntter
astonishment may be better imagined
than described when the audacious
Crispin drew the pile toward him, and
paid over to the owner one-half the
amount in notes ot precisely the same
value and issue. For the reason that
few men like to allow themselves to re?
main the only victims of such a huge
joke, the fun was oontinuod for several
days, much to the amusement of those*
who had been in the secret from the first,
and to the disgust of certain sharp ones
who had been so far misled as to have
attempted a "corner" in the market.
SPRING SUITS AND CAMBRICS.-Jennie
June, in her "fashion gossip," already
writes of spring wear, and says:
"Moat of the spring suits in prepara?
tion are mad? np with the Queen Marga?
ret polonaise, the waist of which is cut
with a spring and forma a small waist at
the baok. There are others, the upper
garments to which are ont in the Gabri?
elle polonaise style, that is, whole in
front, with ornamental bows or rosettes
and simulated basque back. The most
stylish of theso upper dresses are cut
very long and are very little trimmed.
The under suit, for example, is rather
long and perfectly plain; the upper
dress reaches within a quarter of a yard
of the bottom of the lower skirt at the
baok, and is simply cut out in wide,
shallow scollops and bound; some are
looped only on one side; some are not
looped up at all. The pretty striped
cambrics and peroales, which always
make their appearance with the first of
the crocuses and snow-drops, oannot bo
put to better nae than making them up
into long, sack morning dresses, with or
without a deep flounce, sewn to, not pnt
in the skirt, or into rather long skirts,
and 8aoques simply finished with abroad
hem and belted in with a bow at the
baok of the belt. In tho latter form
they can be worn as summer street
dresses in the country."

never have found its way into the po?
litical vocabulary of a free republic, is
fast losing ita magic power, and may
now be considered at a discount. The
Supreme Court, in its decision against
the Drake amendment, has completely
set it aside as a protection to Government
robberies, and the Court of Claims has
kioked it out of its witness stand. It is
not necessary now that a man should
have always been "loyal" in order to get
bis rights, and, in point of faot, we may
consider the fourteenth amendment im?
posing political disabilities, as among
the things that were. Tho pardoning
Sower of Andrew Johnson, exeroiscd
efore the adoption of the amendment,
knooks the whole thing out of breath.
Under the late Supreme Court decision,
the people of the States may elect whom
they please to office, whether exeoutive,
legislative, or judicial. We are all loyal
now, at least until we aro sent to Con?
gress, where they respect no law, human
or,divine. That is the only place on
this broad continent whero a Southern
man is not a freeman and in tho full
enjoyment of all his rights under the
constitution.-Savannalt Republican.
"GOING WEST-AND GIVING IT UP.
The Baltimore American makes this
statement:
Those who have a hankering after the
oheap lands of the far West, should give
attention to a fact, reported by a gentle?
man, who says he has boen in tho United
States Land Office for Ave years, that
"about one-half the homestead entries
made are abandoned, and the land en?
tered by others; in many oases the entry
is abandoned three or four nineo before
coming into the possession of persons
who hold it permanently. Proof of six
months abandonment is sufficient to have
the entry canceled." This alone, and
there is no reason to doubt the fact
stated, should convince those who have
but small means, how poor are their
chanco of sucoess in regions where, if
there are neighbors to be found, every
one has us much as he can struggle
under in his efforts to offeot a "clearing;"
and hence if sick ess or accidents of any
kind should overtake the settler, what
an amount of sorrow and trouble, and
finally a loss of all the labor that may
have been performed, must finally attack
those who seek their fortunes in those
desolate regions.
