the time occupied in the transit by the
street passenger railway or other .rdina
ry means of conveyance, takes a serious
slice out of the working day. Tho large
s?beme of n viaduct railway projected
last year having fallen through, a new
plan, called tho depressed railway, has
been brought forward by the chief en?
gineer of the New Haven Railroad, which
is now before the State Legislature for
charter. The road is to run through
the blocks, the tracks to be below tho
surftpe of the earth sufficiently to allow
th?^Mtssage of cars under tho streets.
Tho out is to be fifty feet wide, so as to
accommodate double tracks. There will
ho, at convenient distauccs, stairways,
platforms and other accommodations for
passengers. The motivo power, of
course, will bo steam. The projectors
say that they can construct this roud for
$250,000 a mile, aud that the right of
way will c?st $8,000,000. Tho whole
cost of the railway in running order will |
be somewhat moro than $10,000,000.
Tho Evening Post is assured - that the I
capital is ready to begin the work as
soon as the authority can be obtained.
STRONG LANGUAGE BETWEEN TICH?
BORNE COUNSEL,.-In the Tichborne case,
on the 7th instant, the attorney-general
denounced in strong terms the "miqui-1
tr, injustice and groundlessness" of tho
claims to the estates, and unhesitatingly
asserting that all tho lawyers who lent
themselves to itu prosecution,-"modo :
themselves accomplices of tho people
engaged in the fraud." Later in tho day
both Serjeant Ballantine and Mr. Giffard,
the claimant's leading counsel, emphati?
cally protested against tho language of
tho attorney-general. Tho former
prayed tho court to protect him from
the "endless insinuations" of Sir John
Coleridge, while Mr. Giffard "declined
to characterize" tho passages in whioh
the head of the English bar baa charged
himself and Serjeant Ballantine with
being accomplices in the prosecution of
a fraud. Tho attorney-general, however,
declined to withdraw anything which
he had said.
Hattie Thomas is tho name of the Con?
necticut girl who had her scalp taken off
by the maohiuery in a hutton factory
about a year ago, and now rejoices in
another skin transplanted from other
parts of her own body and the bodies of
others.
