A Kiss at thc Door.
We were standing in the door-way
My little wifo and I
Tho golden ann upon her hair
Fell down ao ailcntly,
A small white hand upon my arm,
What could I ask for moro,
Than the kindly glance of loving eyes,
As bho kieaod me at tho door.
I know she loves with all her hoart
Tho one who st?nde besidel
And tho years have boen so joyous
Sinoe first I called her bride!
We've had BO muoh of happiness
Since wo mot in years before.
But the happier time of all wae,
When she kissed mo at tho door.
Who cares for woalth of land or gold.
Of fame, or matchless power?
It does not givo the happiness
Of just ono little hour,
With one who loves mo aa her lite
She sayasho "lovos mo more"
And I thoaght abo did this morning,
When sho kissed mo at the door.
At times it acorns that all the world,
With all its woalth of gold,
IB very small and poor indeed,
Compared with what I hold!
And whon the clouds hung grim and dark,
I only think the moro
Of "one" who waits my coming step
To kiss me at tho door.
If she lives till ago shall scatter
Tho frost upon her head,
I know she'll lovo mo just the same
As the morning wo were wed;
But if the angels call hor,
And she goes to Heaven boforo,
I shall know hor when ? moot her,
For she'll kiss mo at tho door.
A MAN IMPRISONED FOR MURDER ES?
CAPES AND RETURNS AT THE TIME HE
PROMISED HE WOUIJD.-Tho Bostrop
(La.) Conservative saya: The sheriff was
very much astonished tho other morning
when a gentleman walked in the conrt
room, stepped np behind him, tapped
him on the shonlder, and told him he
was ready to be arrested again. A re?
cognition of the man was accompanied
by a smile on the part of the sheriff,
whioh seemed to indicate at once the en?
tire return of all his confidenoe in
haman nature. As soon as the sheriff
"rallied," however, he went down into
the depths of his inside coat pooket, and
brought forth a writ of arrest and exe?
cuted it under the eye of the court, the
accused having plaoed himself in readi?
ness, as aforesaid. It will be remem?
bered that this is tho same man who, a
short time ago, was in confinement in the
parish jail, and who, upon being allow?
ed a good many privileges, locked the
sheriff in one day, and went to his home
in Arkansas. Upon his departure,
though, he left the sheriff a note, stat?
ing to him that he need not feel any re?
sponsibility on account of his escape, as
ho would return when the 'court met,
and he has Kept his word. He is indict?
ed for murder.
The ignorance and stupidity of tho
darkest ages can be found even in the
midst of our own enlightened time. An
indignation meeting was recently held at
Lake Village, Fla., at which a resolution
was adopted, with scarcely a dissenting
voice, to drive away the Signal Service
at that place, "because it was believed
that his instruments caused the unex?
ampled bad weather and large amount
of rain which has fallen lately."
They don't keep any whiskey for sole
in Greeley, Colorado, bat they have a
medicino for rattle-snake bites which is
quito ns good, and it has a very ready
salo. People got drunk upon it, but
that is part of the system of cure.
