voluntarily offered and paid a reward of
$160 to the ohief of the Cincinnati po
-lice, for the recovery of certain stolen
goods and the arrest of the thief, got
the amount baok in a suit at law in Oin
oinnati, on Tuesday last. The court
held that the offioer, being under tho
{>ay of the oity expressly for tho per-1
ormanoe of such service, had no right
to ask for or receive additional compen?
sation ftom a robbed citizen, whom tbe
authorities are bound to protect. Which
is good law nod good sense, though it
may seem otherwise to the disappointed
offioer, who appears to have ucted in
good faith in this particular case.

HOMICIDE IN BENNHTTSVTLLE.-We
learn from the Bennettsville Times that,
on Christmas night, William MoOollum
was stabbed in that place by Frank
Cook, both colored, tho wound taking
efieot iu the thigh, the femoral artery
being severed. Hs died in a few mi?
nutes. Whiskey was the oause of the
difficulty. An inquest was held, and n
verdiot rendered in accordance with the
facts above stated.

is a child, now three months old, weigh?
ing but two pounds. Its length is only

A painful story comes to us that the
