policy-holderB from twenty-five to thirty per cont, of the amount oharged for premiums.
When life insuranoe companies were first organized, reliability of the data upon which pre?
miums were constructed had not undergone tost of experience. It was thought, therefore,
no more than common prudenoo to cdopt a scale of premiums which would, in any event,
meet all the presumed and unforeseen contingencies of the business.
As long aa the matter was involved in somedoubt.it was better to fix tho rate too high than
to incur tho risk of making it too low; beoanae, in tue former caae, the orror could ho eaaily
romediod, at least in part, by returning to tho policy-holders, at certain intervals, such por?
tion of the premium charged as waa found necessary for tho purposes of the business and
tho complete security of the comp- ny.
Exporionoe, however, having satisfactorily demonstrated that those rates aro excessive,
what possible excuse can there be for maintaining thom?
Availing themselves of thiB experience, the Directora and Managers of tho Universal Life
Insurance. Company, at its organization, adopted a scale of premiums in accordance there?
with, and whiob has proved to be fair and adequate, and all that WRB necessary to meet tho
requirements ol tho business. Those promiums aro about twentv-tlve per cent, lower than
those oharged by mutual companies.
It also appeared, inasmuch as the rates BO established wore SB noar aa could possibly be
dotermined/air rates, and not lu excess of what insurance has previously coat the policy?
holders in mutual companies, that any profits arising from prudent management Justly and
roperly belonged to the stockholders of tho company, for the risk incurred by them in un
ertaking the business.
Experience has shown that tbero are sources of profit in tbe pruclice of the businosa which
theory will not admit of being considered as elements in the calculation of the proiniuma.
ThoBu resulta form a saving in the mortality of the members of a company owing to tho me?
dical selection of good lives, a gain in interest on the investments of tho company over that
aaaumod in the calculation of ita promiums, the profits derivable from tho lapsing and sur?
render of policies by tho mombers, and from other minor sources.
Profits from these sources, in a company possessed of a oapital of 1200,000, and doing a fair
amount of business, would give to the stockholders di vid onus largely in excess ot what wer?
counted on by the Directors of the Universal at tho time of its organization. They have,
therefore, dotorminod to divide among the poliov-holdors of tho company a largo part of the
profits aooruing from tho sources named, all of which havo heretofore been divided among
tho stockholders.
Tho plan adopted for such division Is as follows: Every peraon who may hereafter insure
with the Universal will, for tho purposes of division, bo troated aa a stockholder to oxtont of
one annual premium upon hia polioy: and will share in the profits of the Comnany to precisely
the same extent as a Stockholder owning an equal amount of the Capital Stock'.
By thia syst om of inauranoo, original with tho Universal, tho policy-holdora secure tho fol?
lowing important advantages:
1. Insurance at tho regular "atock" ratoa, requiring a primary outlay of about twontv.to
thirty por cent. I ess than that charged by mutual companies, and ?vhiou is equivalent to a
yearly "dividend" paid in ad vaneo of that amount on mutual rates. This low cost ot insur?
ance is worthy of attention. Since its organization, this company has received in premiums
(rom its policy-holders tho Bum of $1,517,000. To effect tho esme amount of insurance iii a
mutual company would havo oost them an initial outlay of $2.000,000. By allowing its policy
holdora to retain, in their own poBsoBsion, this excess ot $483,000, thu Universal tm? virtually
paid thom a "dividend" of $483,000, and paid it, too, in advance, instead of at the end of ono
or more j ears. It is impossible to find any examplo of a mutual company furnishing insur?
ance at so low a cost by returning to policy-holders an oqual amount upon similar receipts.
2. Participation in tho legitimate profita of tho company, upon a plan which secures to the
policy-holders tho same treatment which directors sud stockholders award to themselves.
Phis system of participation, in connection with tho low "stock" rates of premiums, must
nocosBarily secure to the policy-holders every possible advantago to ho derived from prudent
and caroful management.
Tbo low rates of premium comped oconomy. and, independent of participation, guarantee
to tho policy-holder his inauranco at a rate which is not in excess of tho cost in woll managed
mutual companies; while, by the proposed plan of participation in what may bo considered
tho legitimate prouts of tho business, tho cost will bo still fnrthor diminished.
Thus by tho combined advantagos arising from low stock rato and participation in profits,
it is confidently beliovod the UNIVERSAL LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY offers inauranco
at its lowest practicable coat.
