Bristol, England, averred thai he gave

decline was the fate of every nation
which lost the habit of speaking or act
lug;'the truth. He spoke with even

that "by cultivating the habit of perfect

gradually making themselves good men
of business, good engineers, able and
jruaty men, but they would be enlisting
ffe pmselvea on the side of truth and

darkness." He added that "what was
wanted now-n-days was more aoouraoy,
more troth, more carefulness of faot,
and that in proportion as carefulness

Kingsley specially sought to preach:
"The nations who had been successful
were those who faced facts, whether they
liked them or not. Such nations would

enabled them to lay hold of faot and
keep it, and as long as they were work?
ing with the eternal laws of nature, they
had those laws on their side; but as soon
as any nation lost its hold on them, so
surely did that nation go down, gently
at first* and then with a torrible drop,

There is no doubt whatever that the
practical truthfulness of the English
character has been one of the great ele?
ments'of the commercial greatness of
that country. The London Telegraph,
in its comments upon Mr. Kingsley's
address, remarks that our Saxon "an?
cestors despised a liar as heartily as they
despised a ooward. And that is the
supreme heritage whioh they left to the
England of modern days. Truth has
also bairn the basis on whioh English
workmanship has rested its claim to the
first place in the markets of the world.
No abondanoe of iron, or coal, or skill
could have won such a position. It was
won by sheer, hard, honest toil. The
world found that English stockings,
knives and forks, yarn, steel pens and
locomotives were made of the best ma?
terial that could be procured. Tho de?
sign might not display beauty of artistic
taste, but at least the workmanship was
characterized by admirable strength and
finish. No where else would the wheel
of a locomotive be rejected by the manu
facturer because it boro an infinitesimal
flaw, too minute to ohallecge the criti?
cism of the Government inspector, and i
too trivial to weaken the iron rim. ]
Hence, on ' the continent, 'English j
goods' becomes but another name for
honesty of workmanship. Practical
truthfulness had been of more service to j
the nation than a dozen mines of gold.
By veracity of deed the nation had been j
more onriohod than it woold have been <
if an English Bismarck had annexed a
dozen provinces, and fonnd tributaries '
in the greatest of continental States." i
It is a funny fact, that when a Mormon J
wife is deprived by age of all her charms, j
she immediatvly becomes heart-broken,
and declares that polygamy is the devil's
own institution.
