The German Arctic expedition did not
discover the open ssa after a!!-a fact
which is rather mortifying to the knights
of the quill vt ho made such an outcry
over the falso report. Some practical,
scientific individual, ?bo has no soul
for sentiment, informs the too confiding
public that what they did discover was
"aft open ohannel between Spitzbergen
and Nova Zembla, which, it wns sur?
mised, (mark the word,) might possibly
lead into an open Polar sea." It remains
to bo proved that thia ohannel was any?
thing more than a temporary opening
through the ice, and that a second ex?
pedition may not find it locked as se?
curely ns any other part of the Artic
sens.
The Washington Patriot says: South?
ern Radical Senators now in Washington
boast of the continuance o' the martial
law programme of the administration
far beyond the limits of the nine Coun?
ties in South Carolina. One of these of?
ficials, who has consulted with the Pre?
sident, declares that the Ku Klux law
will bo enforced and the writ of habeas
corpus suspended in every portion ol the
South whero the evidence of the Ku
Klux Committee alleges that outrages
have been committed. The wholesale
arrests in South Carolina but precedo
those that will shortly be inaugurated in
Northern Alabama and Georgia, and
Mississippi, and probably Texas. The
President is urged daily to take these
violent steps by the advice of Southern
Republicans, who also threaten him that
tho ground is .slipping rapidly under
their feet, in the face of an impending
Presidential campaign.
A writ of error has been grunted by
Judge Ingrahum in the case of Rosenz
weig, providing tor a review of the case
before the Appellate Court. The pro?
