"Wo take the following from the
PHOENIX, of yesterday:.
'/Again, it baa waged unremitting
war upon 'Ka Kluxisrn,' and helped to
involve whole communities in the net
Bpread, and yet the editor ol tho Union
began kia career in South Carolina a$ the
re-organizer of the, Un^on. League-a se?
cret Radical league-oathbonnd, and at
once political, military and religions in
ita influence. ;
"The portion to wbioh wo call atten?
tion is that printed in italics.
""We have never, from the first day w?
set our foot into 'this State, up to th?
present, been inside a Union League
meeting, Newor or aran i zod. or re-organ
ized snoba league', and never, passed
through this Btato as*"the 'grand bead
centre and 'organizer of the' Union
League/ - and 'whoever asserts to the
contrary is a liar and. a calumniator. IB
that plain enough?" .
"We are authorized to state, by a gentle
man, whosd' veracity dare not bs ?ju ca?
tion ed, that a Republican in high posi?
tion, from this State, told bim, in Phila?
delphia, some time last year, that he had
received a letter, from thia same Ii. Casa
Carpenter, informing him that he was
about to go through the State to organ
\ ize (or re-organize) the Union Leagues,
and if ho would contributo funds to pay
Mr. C's expenses, he would advocate
his interests among the members of the
Leagues. '?
It io very plain that if the immaculate
editor o' the Unioti did not "pass
through tho Stato," Sea., he intended to,
and was only prevented from doing so
because there was not enough of Radi?
cal idol (greenbacks) forthcoming for
him to make a good spock ont of.

AHMED BANDS.-"We have received
information from the most reliable au?
thority to tho effeot that on Thursday,
of last week, an armed band made their
appearance in the village of New Pick
ens. j s The persons were all moun ted and
wore their arms unconcealed; were pro?
vided with rations, &o. They inquired
for United States maps, and stated they
were leaving South Carolina for good
and were on their way to Georgia. None
. of the . citizens of the ? Tillage could re?
cognize any of the party."
We dip the above from the Daily
Union, of October 80. We positively as?
sert that no such "band" has ever been
in our village, and anything to the con?
trary is an unblushing, bare-faced false?
hood, and- the informant, whoever be
may be; knew 4t to be false when he

AFEW reasons why they should have the
preference over all others: . <
X. Wheeler & Wilson's Sowing Machino is
much simpler than any of the others; re?
quiring less than half the amount'of ma?
chinery.
2. As tho result nf this simplicity, this ms*
chine is much let-s liab'e than the others to
get out of repair.
8. Another reeult ol this simplicity le'
greater durability. ->
4. Another result is less friction, and, con?
sequently, greater ease and rapidity of mo?
tion, with less noise.
5. And greatest or all, that it uses no.Shut?
tle, and makes tho lock stitch.
It ?H tho cheapest to buy the beat. Boy the
machino that lias jhatly, fairly and honora?
bly won a ropntation and independence
against a strong and bitter competition. For
more than twenty years has tno- Wheeler &
Wilson not only stood first and foremost, bnt
now stands the uni i vailed Sowing Machine ol
the enlightened civilized world. Dov the ma?
chine that baa been thus tested and proved,
and then yon aro euro to get tho bret. For
