Thin may or may. not be trne. We
neither affirm nor. deny, but, accepting

nity is to be held responsible for the pri?
vate acts of private individuals. If a
man gets drunk, or if he be hot-temper?
ed and inconsiderate, it ia beyond reason
to' suppose that the community ia re?
sponsible for acts that he may oommit.
Yet any and every act the Union charges
to the Klan-we want the proof that the
Kiana exist in the County. We condemn
thu act-< of the supposed Klan as much
aa the Union, but we assert, without the
fear of successful contradiction, that
there is no evidence that tho Klan ever
had an organization in this County.
That the organization existed in Spar?
tanburg, may or may not be true. With
thia we have nothing to do. We.turn
tho Union over to those who represent
that County. We tell the Union, how?
ever, that we are too old in debate to be
dragged from the main to collateral is?
sues. .Tho Union asserted that the Klan
existed in this County, and we say to the
Union prove it, or acknowledge that you
have lied. So far the Union has acknow?
ledged to the falsehood.
Laying aside the defensive, and assum?
ing the offensive, we say to the Union \
that it has utterly .failed to establish a
Bingle fact to prove that the Ku Klux |
exist SB an organization in this County.
Secondly, we have shown that abuses I
of a private oh anio ter have been magni?
fied by the Union into sensational crimes
and Ku Klux horrors.
Thirdly, wo have shown our willing?
ness to go to the record to prove that the I
?Zniou is the only paper in the State that
has advocated an organization,of a Ku |
Klux charaoter.
Fourthly, we have shown that the
Union is altogether partisan. That it j
publishes all of one aide, and more, bat I
withholds the truth -when it snits its pur -,
poses to further it** partisan designs..
