M??? COLUMBIA. S. Cl Saturday rio mine, October 28.1871. THE RESPONSES.-The 8partanbarg| Spartan says: "Yon are reported." "A warrant isl out for your arrest." "They have your name on the list of those who are to be arrested," &e. These are among the rumors which are industriously circul?t ed over the County. These reports have driven some persons from the Coun? ty who are innocent of any violation of] law. These persons feel that to be ar? rested now, while the writ of habeas cor? pus is denied them, would cause great inconvenience to the innocent. Also, tho flimsy testimony of swift and preju? diced witnesses, upon which some per-1 no ns have been arrested, and which is[ sufficient to send a mau to prison with? out a hearing till the court convenes in Columbia, has frightened many and caused them to avoid being arrested. This oourt which, it is threatened, shall be made "memorable" as the court at Raleigh, where, it is said, nten were tried to be oonvioted, is dreaded alike by the innocent and the guilty. Bat we incline to the belief that the oaly danger to in? nocent parties before this oourt will be found in mercenary and prejudiced wit? nesses in the hands of malicious indi? viduals. We hope those who hear snob rumors an y/o quote above, will not take them to bo true iu all cases. > 'Let not any ono bo alarmed who feels himself innocent. We kuow that under an ordi? nary stete of affairs innocent persons! would defy such rumors, feeling their ability, before honest jurors, npon a fair trial, to vindicate their innocence. The Newberry Herald says: The proclamation of President Grant is not only an abomination, bnt a tissue of nonsense. That portions of the State uro itt rebellion-Newberry included-?B tho basest falsehood ever uttered, andi the order to bring in arms and uniforms] perfectly farcical.')'But we .are in the; power Of a perverse and wicked enemy, j What else can We expect? The thieves, I besides, have 'whetted their blades to j reap a golden harvest, and they are the power behind the throne. That disor? ders have occurred in tho State and in tho Counties named, no one ever denied, but they havo been exaggerated a thou? sand fold, and all of.them have been ouused by tho corruptness of the times, and the teachings of unprincipled, de? signing Radicals. Here is where the whole difficulty lies. Law and order should bo maintained in the State, but never will it be nnder the restrictions of this unjust proclamation. Tho license for thieving, plundering and incendia? risms is not thought of, or rather is thought of as another drop in the bucket to break the baoka of the law-abiding and peaceable citizens of the State. Let General Grant, the so-oalled hero, and President of a great people, think of th ie. GENEHATJ JOE JOHNSTON.-The Sond? ern Home, speaking of this distinguished General, says: We have always boon disposed to place General Johnston in the front rank of the great commanders of history. His great intellect and personal courage won the admiration of his soldiers, while his warm, genial natara secured their love. The veterans of Napoleon did not idolize their Emperor more than did our ragged rebels tho lion-hearted Johnston. No one now doubts that his policy of disre? garding positions and suffering an army to be cooped up. would have saved the Confederacy. Tho Franco-Prussian war is an eloquent tribute to Joe Johnston Sedan and Strasburg wore but repeti? tions of tho folly of Vicksburg, Port Hodson and Richmond. The Star of the South set in gloom and disaster when Johnston was removed at Atlanta. Sherman exulted at the not, and cried out, like Napoleon nt Ansterlitz, "Now I havo them!" The bullied "hammer" knew that his time had oome, and dap? ping his hunda he said: "I have foaght, hitherto, when Johnston pleased; now 1'il make Hood fight when I please." Au interesting archaeological expedi? tion ia to be made lo Asia Minor, under the direction of Prof. Curt?as, the Ger? man archaeologist. A gun-boat has beeb' furnished by the Imperial Government for tho expeditions, which, among other things, will explore some parts of the coast which aro seldom visited. The ex? plorations will commence with the Pro? fessor's investigations at the plain of old Troy. Accompanying the party is also a distinguished architect, who has been commissioned to prepare plans for the restoration of tho Olm rob of the Knights of St. John at Jerusalem, which atrno turo was preaeuted to the Emperor of Germany by the Sultan of Turkey two years ?gp. . Tho results of this expedi? tion cannot but 'be of interest to the world, when tho historio character of the regions to be Visited is taken into consi? deration, and the thoroughness and in? telligent manner with whiob suoh matters aro conducted by German scholars,-are a warranty for the assurance that the work of thia expedition will be well done. THE PoiirxiOATj BKVC?EES.- The Radi? cal press crow over the fuot that a large number of persons have fled from their' homes, in the upper Counties of South! Carolina, since the suspension by Gene? ral Grant of the writ of habeas corpus.' Their flight is construed as a confession of crime; while, in sober truth, it onlyi means that they aro anxious to avoid an! arrest without cause, and a conviction without proof of guilt. The court! houses in the upper Counties are thronged with idling vagabonds who have been supported by the Radical politicians, and aro now tho paid spic of the Government. As witnesses, they can earn two dollars & day, nnd no ques? tions asked. No tale is too wildly absurd to be believed. The best men of the country aro arrested, and subjected to nameless indignities, upon the bare affidavit of a greedy or malicious negro. There is no redress. For tho unfortu? nate who is thrown in jail, there is no hope of escape. And they who arej purest in life and character run the most risk, because the Government! offioials dare "to mako examples" of those whom the people trust and respect.
