When lifo insurance companies were ?rt-t organized, reliability of the datanpon which pre?
miums were constructed had not undergone lef t of experience, lt was thought, therefore, no
moro thau common prudence to adopt a ecalo of premiums which would, in any event, meot
all tho presumed and unforeseen contingench s of the business. As long as the matter was
involved in sumo doubt, it was belter to fix t he i ute too high than to turor the risk of mak?
ing it too low; because, in the former cuse, tho error could ho easily ri tn 'died, at least in
part, hy returning to the policy-holders, at ctrtain intervals, euch pon iou of the premium
charged as was found necessary for tho pnrpoies nf tho business and the complete Bccnrlty
of the company. Experience, however, having eutisfacto ih demonstrated that theso rates
aro oxcessive, what possible excuso can there he for maintaining them?
Availing themselves of this experience, ibo Directors and Managers of ihe Universal Life
Insnranco Company, at its organization, adopti d a scale of premiums in accordance there?
with, and which has proven to be fait and adi quate, and all that was necessary to meet the
requirements of the business. Theso premiums aro about twenty-five per cent, lower than
those obarge hy mutual oompaneia. It also appeared, inasmuch aa tho rates so established
wcro as nbar as could possibly be determined lair rates, and not in excess of what insnranco
has previously cost the policy-holders in motual companies, that any profits arising from
prudent management Justly and properly belonged to tho stockholders of the company, for
the rirtk incurred by them m undertaking tho business.
Experience has shown that there are sources of profit in tho practice of the business wbioh
theory will not admit of being considered aa clements in thc calculation of the premiums.
Theso results form a saving in the mortality of the niemhtre of a company owing to the me?
dical sch ction of good lives, a gain in interest on the investments of the cempany over that
assumed in the calculation of RB prtminms, the profits derivable from the lapsing and sur?
render of policies by tho members, and from other minor tourers. Profits from theso sources,
in a company possessed of a capita1 of f'A'O OOO, and doing a fair amonnt of business, would
give to tho stockholders dividends largely in excess of what were counted on by the Directors
of tho Universal at tho time of its organization. They have, therefore,determined to divido
among tbo policy-holders of tho company a largo part of tho profits accruing from the
sources named, all of which have heretofore been divided among the stockholders.
Tho plan adopted for such division is aa follows: Every person who may hereafter insure
with tho Universal will, for tho purposes of division, be treated as a stockholder to extent ef
one annual premium upon his policy; and will share in the promo of ibo company to precisely
samo extent as a stockholder owning an equal amount of the capital stock.
Ry this system of insurance, original with the Universal, tho policy-holder secures the fol?
lowing important advantagot:
1. Insnranco at the regular "stock" rates, rc quiring a primary outlay of about twenty to
thirty por cent, lees than that charged by mutual companies, and which is equivalent toa
yearly "dividend" paid in : dvance of that amount on mutual rates. Ibis low cost of insur?
ance is worthy of attention. Since its organization, this company has received in premiums
from its policy-holders tho sum of (1.C17.000. To effect tho same amount or insurance in a
mutual company would have coat them au initial ontlay of ?2 OOO.ono. By allowing its policy?
holders to retain, in their own possession, this excess of $183,000, tho Universal has virtually
paid them a "dividend" of $483,000 and patd lt, too, in advance, fuetead of at the end of one
or moro years It io impossible to find any e>ample cf a mutual company furrhsbing insnr?
anco at so low a oust by returning to policy-holders an equal amount upon similar receipts.
2 Participation in the legitimate profits of the company, upon a plan which secures to the
