Experience, howover, having satisfactoiily demonstrated that these ratea are excessive, what possible excuso can there bo for maintaining them? Availing themselves of this experioneo, the Directors and Managers of tho Universal Life Insurance Company, at its organization, adopted a acalu of premi?me in accordance there? with, and which has proven to be fair and adequate, and all that was necessary to meet the requirements of the business. These results form a saving in tho mortality of the members of a company owing to the me? dical aolcction of good lives, a gain in interest on tho investments of the company over that assumed in tho calculation of its premiums, tho profits derivablo from thc lapsing and sur? render of policies by tho membors, and from other minor sources. Profits from these sources in a company poasossod of a capital of $200,000, and doing a fair amonnt of business, would givo to tho stockholders dividends largely in exc?s H of what were counted on by the Directors of tho Univorsal at tho time of its organization. They havo, therefore, dotormined to divido among the policy-holders of tho company a largo part of tho profits accruing from tho sources named, all of which havo heretofore been divided among the stockholders. Tho plan adopted for such division is as follows : Evory person wbo may hereafter insure with tho Univorsal will, for the purposes of division, bo treated aa a stockholder to extent ef ono annual premium upon his policy; and will share in the profits of tho company to precisely samo extent as a stockholder owning an equal amount of tho capital stock. By this system of insurance, original with tho Univorsal, the policy-holder secures the fol? lowing important, advantage*: 1. Insurance at, tho regular "stock" ratea, requiring a primary outlay of about twenty to thirty por cont. ICSB than that charged by mutual companies, and which is equivalent to a yearly "dividend" paid in advance of that amount on mutual rates. This low cost of insur? ance ia worthy of attention.
