prudently-managed companies charging "mutual" raina have been able to return to their
policy-holders from 25 to SO per cent, of tho amount charged for premiums.
Whon Ufo insurance companies wore first organized, reliability of tho data upon which pre?
miums wero oonstrnoted had not undergone test cf expedience, lt was thought, therefore, no
moro than common prudence to adopt a scale of prendrons which would, in any event,.meot
all the presumed and unforeseen co nt in gen ci? o of the husiuesa. AB long as tho matter waa
involved in some doubt, it waa better to fix thc rato too high lhan to incur Ibo risk of mak?
ing it too low; because, in tbe former caao, tho e rror could ho easily remedied, at least in
part, by returning to the policy-holders, ut certain intervals, such portion of tho premium
charged as was found necessary for tho pur poxes of the business and tho complete security
of the company. Experience, however, having satisfactorily demonstrated that tbesoratoa
are excessive, what possible excuse can there bo for maintaining thom?
Availing themselves of this experience, the Directors and Managers of tho Universal Life
Insurance Company, at its organization, adopte d a teak of premiums in accordance there?
with, and which bas proved to be fait and adequate, and all that was necessary to meet the
requirements o? tho business. Those premiums aro about twenty-ATO por cent, lower than
thoeocbargo by mutual companciB. It aleo appeared, inasmuch aa tho rates BO established
wero aa noar as could possibly be determine d fair rates, and not in excess of what insurance
has previously coat thc policy-holders, in mutual companies, that any profita arising from
prudent management justly and properly belonged lo the stockholders of tho company, for
the risk incurred by them in undertaking tho business.
Experience baa shown that thora aro sources of profit in thc practice of the business which
theory will not admit of being considered aa clem on ts in the calculation ol thc premiums.

dical selection of good lives, a gain in Interest on tho Investmente of thc company over that

render of policies by the members, and from other minni- s on wee. Profits from these sources,
in u company possessed of a capital of f 200,roo, ami doing a fair amount of bueliices, would
give to tho stockholders dividends largely in excess of what w ere counted on by ibo Directors
ol tho Universal at tho time of its organization. They have, therefore, determined io divide:
among tho policy-holders of the company a largo part of tho profits accruing from tho
sources named, all of which have heretofore been divided among tho stockholders.
The plan adopted for such division is as follows: Every person who may hereafter insure
with tho Universal will, for tho purposes of division, be treated aa a stockholder to extent oj
ono annas! premium anon his policy; and will share in thc profits of tho company to prociaoly
samo extent as a stockholder owning au equal amount of thc capital stock.
By this system of insurance, original with thc Universal, tho policy-holder secures the fol?
lowing important advantages:
1. Insurance, at tho regular "stock" ralcB, requiring a primary outlay of about tweniy to
thirty per cont, loss than that charged by mutual companies, and which is 'equivalent to a
yearly "dividend" paid in advance of that amount on mutual rutee. This hw erst of insur?
ance is worthy of attention. Sinco its organization, this company has received in premiums
from its policy-holders tho sum of $1,517,000. To cdc et tho sanm amount of influence in a
mutual company would have cost them an initial outlay of $2 000,000. By allowing its policy?
holders to retain, in their own possession, this CXCCBB of $483,000, tho Universal bas virtually
paid thom a "dividend" of $483,000. and paid it, too, in advance, instead of at tho ord of ono
or more years. It ls impossible to find any example cf a mu tn ai company fut niching insur?
ance at so low a cost by returning to polioy-holdera an equal amount npnn similar receipts.
2. Participation in the legitimate profits of the company, upon a plau which secures to thc
pnlioy-holders the same treatment which directum and stockholders award to themselves.
This system of participation, in connection with tho low "stork" ratoB of premiums, must
nocossarily secure to tho policy-holders every possible advantage to bo derived from prudent
and oaroful management.
Tho low rates of premium compel economy, and, Independent of participation, guarantee
tn tho policy-holder his Insurance at a rato which is not in excess of tho cost in well managed
mutual companies; whilo, by the proposed plan or participation in what may bc considered
tho legitimato profits of the business, tho coat will bo still further diminished.
