and investigation shown iu many cuses
.the grossest negligence and carelessness
.ou the part of letter-writers. It is no
uncommon occurrence to lind letters,
.containing valuable papers, drafts,
cheeks aud money, dropped into post
offices without superscription, or per?
haps with the name of the party to
whom addressed, without anything to
indicate the post office, County or Slate
.to which it is to go.
'One source of great annoyance is the
.ousttm which prevails, especially in Vir?
ginia and North Caroliua and through
? out the South, of giving to residences in
the country a faucy mime, and dutiug
letters ''Loans Hill," "SunnysideFarm,"
"Buttonwood Castle," &c. Parties re?
ceiving letters bearing such addresses
take no heed of the post-mark upon the
.envelope, but naturally direct their re?
plies to the place indicated at tho head
?of <bke letter, and the result is tho letter
ris forwarded from one part of a State lo
another, uutil, as a general thiug, it
finds its way back to the dead letter
.office, and perhaps finally reaches the
writer. There aro but about 30,000
post offices iu tho United States, and
the department has a list of over
30,000 names of localities, most of them
merely faucy names, to which letters are
addressed, and each day adds to the list.
If people, in writing letters, would dato
them according to the name of the post
office through which they receive their
mail, they would save themselves much
Annoyance, and their correspondents
from the apparent charge of neglect, be?
sides in some degree lessening tho labors

A BOSTON CLERGYMAN.-Rev. Mr. F-,
of Boston, who bad accepted au invita?
