A paper woe reoently read before the Bri? tish Association, at Edinburgh, giving an uocount of tho ravage? of the Boa on tho East oocst of Yorkshire, from which it appeared that the loss of territory from this oaase is quite considerablo. Ou this particular coast we aro informed that this loss amouutB every year tp two or three yards-or to eomo thirty-five nores annually between Farnborough Head and Spurn Point. This, in a hun? dred years, amounts to tho respectable aroa of 3,700 acres. On tho remniuing ooast-lino the encroachment has been fully as great-in somo places, within living memory, the sea having advanced more than a milo. This is nothing new to tho geologist. Near the town of Puzzuoli, nt the head of tho Bay of Bairo, there are threo mar? ble pillars, tho remains of the Temple of Serapis. Tho marblo pavement on which they stand, and which was, in tho second century, tho floor of tho temple, is sunken three foot beneath thc waves. Six feet below this thero in another cost? ly pavement of mosaic, which was doubt? less the original floor of the templo. The foundations of the temple are nine feet below the surface of the sea. Ex? plorations made during tho present cen? tury show that these columns nre sinking at the rato of one inch per year. At St. Augustine, in Florida, tho Btu m ps of cedur trees stand beneath thc hard beach nh ell-rock, immersed in thc water at the lowest titles. Some of thc sounds of North Carolina, which have been navigable within tho memory o living sea-captains, uro now impussabh bars or emerging saud-fluts. Along thc coast of Now Jersey the sea has eu crouched, within ?ixty years, upon tin sites of former habitations, and ea tiri forests have been prostrated by tho in uudation. Tho ancient city of Louis bourg, on the island of Capo Breton once the stronghold of the French ii America, and which had a population o 20.000 souls, is now partially nude - water. Tho rock on which tho brav General Wolfe landed has nearly disap peured, and sites once inhabited have bc come the ocean's bed. lu 1822 the entir coast of Chili was elevated from two ti seven feet-an extent equal to the are of Virginia and North Carolina bavin been lifted np bodily.. The entire chai of the Aleutian isles, from Alaska t Kamschatka, was once a ridge of lan connecting the two continents.
