[The shores of Narragansett Bay aro al?

most enthusiastically. The following lines,
which, in substance, follow quito faithfully
the letter of a young lady to a friend in the
West, will convey somo idoa of the feelings
excited by a first visit to the Bea shore:]
Dear Lelia, I'vo seen the great ocean,
The wonderful tossing seal
I wish I could givo you a not ion
Just how it appears to mo.
It's awfully lovely sad crushing,
It's big and jolly and blue,
It's terrible, stunning and rushing,
It's gorgeously pretty too.
Oh, such bathing! 'tis really delightful,
Though the water is colder than ice!
And if looking liko scarecrows is frightful,
The splashing abont is so nico.
We go in to bathe altogether,
The womon and children and men;
At first I could hardly toll whether

THE LORD, THE LADY AND THE MYS?
TERIOUS TELEGRAM.-The London Court
Circular relates the following ancodote
respecting a noble lady, who is young,
beautiful and good:
During the army bill debate, her noble
husband, who is proud and fond of her,
as.he should, be, was just about to rise
and deliver a violent attack upon some?
thing or somebody, when a telegram
was put into his hands. He read it,
turned pale and quitted the House,
called a cab, drove to tho Charring Gross
station and went to Dover, and was no
more heard of until tho next day, when
he returned to his own home, and to his
'first inquiry was told that the Couutees
Was in her own room. He hastened to
her, and a terrible row ensued, tho exact
words of which no one knows but them?
selves. At last, however, he burst out,
"Then what did you mean by your
telegram?" "Mean? what I said, of
course. What are you talking about ?"
"Read it for yourself," returned the
still unappeased husband. She did
read: "I flee with Mr.-to Dover
straight. Pray for mo." For a mo?
ment she was startled, but then burst
into a hearty fit of laughter. "Most
dreadful telegraph people. No wonder
yon are on t of yon r mind. I telegraphed
simply, "I tea with Mr.-in Dover
street. Stay for me." His Lordship
was so savage at the laugh he had raised
against himself that he waB at first
inclined to make a Parliament question
of it, but, listening to more judicious ad?
vice, restrained.
Mnoh discontent exists in Paris. The
little revival of business that sprang up
after the suppression of the Commune
has died away. Trade is stagnant and
commerce dull. Money is not plentiful,
and even visitors and strangers, hereto?
fore the oity's great reliance, are want?
ing. Worst of all, like a vain coquette
who has been robbed of her charms by
some dreadful acoident, Paris laments
her lost fascinations. The continued
siege-law is blamed for this, and the peo?
ple are signing petitions asking M.
Thiers to raise it.
CONDURANGO.-Condurango has come
to grief. Some time ago, the State De?
partment sent samples of the new drug
alleged by the Radical Galena to bo a
specific for tho euro of cancer to a num?
ber of leading physicians in the several
oities, in order that they might test its
virtues in their practice. Most of these
physicians have made their reports to
the department, and say that the drug
enndurango has no value whatever in the
treatment of this terrific malady.
Very recently, Martha Walker, a young
English woman, climbed the famous
Matterhorn, over 14,7000 feet high, in
company with her father, aged sixty
five, The Matterhorn is one of the
most difficult of all the Alpine peaks to
ascend, and has rarely been attempted
by a woman. The lady is well named,
having climbed Mont Blanc, Bosa and
Other peaka with little fntigue.
The Pope, in receiving the homage of
the Papal Guards, said: "I cannot name
the day of oar deliverance, but the time
is not remote whon we shall issue toge?
ther from oar prison."
Jndge Underwood, of Virginia, has
published bis opinion (unofficial) that all
women will be permitted to deposit their
ballots in tho Presidential contest of
1872.
