They caught him unawares
They killed him and they ate him!

The goodness he had brought them.

Experiences of a Diver.
I have lately had the pleaBnre of an
interview with Mr. J. Wood, of Herne
Bay, who hae followed the business of a
diver for upwards of twenty-two years,
and who has now retired after a long
and active service;
Mr. Wood made, his first start in life
by au extraordinary, and as it turned
out, ' a very lncky piece of diving. If
the reader will look at the map of Ire?
land, he will eoe that outside of Belfast
Lough, and a little to the Bonth-west,
opposite Donaghadee, are situated the
Copeland Islands. It so happened that
a Whitstable man was a coast guard in
this district. He heard a legend that a
ship laden with a heavy cargo of silver
had been wrecked off the Copeland Isl?
ands-soma half a century-ago. He,
therefore, communicated with some of
his friends at Whitstable who were divers.
Accordingly, Mr. Wood and four others
put their diving dresses on board a ves?
sel, and sailed from Whitstable to Do?
naghadee. The story they heard when
they got there voa, that the wrecked
vessel waB in the slave trade, and that
she had on board when she struck on
tho rooka.a largo number of slaves and
a considerable sum of money in silver
dollars. Nothing would have been known
of the wreck having taken place had not
somebody discovered human legs pro?
jecting above the surface of the water.
It appears that tho people on board the
ship had tried to esoape; they had filled
their shirt-sleeves with dollars, but in
getting up the rocks many of them had
fallen back and met with an untimely
end,-as the weight of the dollars had
kept 'their heads" under water. No one
had. ever disturbed the wreck since it
happened, so Mr. Wood and his friends
sot to Work to find out. where it'was.
They put on their diving dresses, and
for two' or three days walked about to
and fro. at the bottom of the sea, in
about ' forty feet of water, searohing for
the treasure. This they did by clearing
away the weeds and turning over the
stones with orowbars, and feeling for
the dollars with their hands, as the water
was too thick to seo. The wreck itself
had entirely perished through the lapse
of time. After a long and careful search,
at last they came upon the dollars; they
were spread about among the stones,
but many had slipped down among a
heap of iron ore which had formed the
ballast of the ship. Many of the dollars
were worn away thin by tho action of
the waves. Some were lying separate,
others in great lumps like rocks soldered
together by iron, certainly in some cases
tho handcuffs used for the slaves. Some
days the divers got $200, sometimes
$300, sometimes $1,000; the best day
thev got $5,000. In all, tho number of
dollars they got up from the wreck was
abont $25,000, a considerable sum of
money when reduced to English pounds.
Mr. Wood showed me one of the dol?
lars, which he always oarrios about with
him. Tho following.is tho inscription:

The coin is about the size of an old flvo
Bbilljug pioce. The "Divers' Arms,"
near the clock-tower at Herne Bay, of
whioh Mri Wood ?B proprietor, owes its
existence to the discovery of these dol?
lars. Mr.. Wood had, on this occasion,
usurious under-water adventure. One
of the divers complained that he was
annoyed by a lobster, and oouldn't work.
Mr. Wood learned tho whereabouts of
the lobster, and went down after bim.
He soon discovered Mr. Lobster sitting
under a rock, looking as savage as a
lobster oan look. His feelers were point?
ed well forward, and ho held ont his two
great claws wide open in a threatening
attitude. Wood, knowing tho habits of
lobsters, gave this fellow his crowbar,
which ho immediately nipped with his
claws. Then, watohing his opportunity,
he passed his signal lino over the lob?
ster's tail, made it fast, and signalled to
the men above to haul up. This they
did, and instantly away went Mr. Lobster,
flying up throngh tho water into tho air
above,, with his olaws still expanded, and
as scared as a lobster could bo.
' A great conger-eel also paid the divers
a visit. He was an immense fellow, and
kept swimming aronui! Wood, but would
riot come near - him. Wood yr??.- afraid
of his hand being^bitten; aa a conger's

Tho brute took all tho flesh alona off the
man's finger. A conger , is a very dan?
gerous animal in the water. Howover.
this conger kept swimming round about
Wood, so he took his elaBp-knifo ont and
tried to stab him, but the conger would
not como near enough to be killed. It
was a long while before the oonger would
go away, and oven after ho had gone
away, Wood could not go. on working,
because he was not suro that he was
really gone for good, and it might hnvo
como out of some corner at any minute
ancTuippbd his fingers.
Mr. Wood has had other adventuros
with fish when Workiug under water.
Ho was once employed in fixing some
heavy stones iu tho harbor at Dover;
while waiting for tho stones to oome
down from the ship above, ho sat down
on a rook, and being very quiet, a shoal
of whiting pout came up to examine the
strange visitor to their sub-aquoous resi?
dence; they played all abont him, and
kept on biting at the thick glass which
formed the eyes of his diving helmet; so
next time Wood went down, he took
with him a fish-hook fastened into the
end of a short stick-a guff, in fuct. The
poota came around bim as usual, and he
gaffed them, one after another, with his
hook. Ho then strung them on a string,
and came np, after his day's work was
orer, with a goodly fry of whiting ponts
for his supper. ',! .
On another occasion, Wood- was em?
ployed to bring np some pigs of lead
from the hold of a vessel. When be WUB
walking abont on the top of the lead, he
felt something alive under his feet. It
kioked tremendously, bnt be knelt down
npon it to keep it Bteady; he soon ascer?
tained that it WOB an enormous skate
tbat be was standing on, so he served
bim as he did the lobster. He watohed
his opportunity, and slipped the noose
of his line around the skate's tail; he
then signalled to "bani," and rip went
Master Skate, flapping bis great wings
like a wounded eagle, and mightily asto?
nished were the people in the boat when
they fonnd a monster skate on the end
of the line, and not a pig of lead.
Wood once nearly lost bis life when at
the bottom of the sea. A FrnBsian ves?
sel bad gone down off the Mouse Buoy
in the Thames estuary. The captain
was drowned in bis cabin, and Wood had
undertaken to get bim ont if he possibly
oonld. Arriving at the bottom of the
sea, Wood fonnd the vessel lying over
on ber side, and that she bad gone down
with all her sails sot. He tried to get
into the cabin, but fonnd the mainsail
ell over the cabin door. He was just
abont to return, when be found that his
air-pipe and signal line bad suddenly got
jammed. Fully aware of bis very dan?
gerous position, and without losing bis
presenoe of mind, be sat quietly on the
edge of the vessel and considered. The
men above he conld -find were signaling
to bim violently to come up, but be
conld not answer, as the line was
jammed. He took out his pocket-knife,
and thought two or three times of cut?
ting himself adrift. As a last chance, he
determined to adopt another courso, so
be climbed up the rigging, among the
great wot sails and loose ropes, as well
ii H he could, and fortunately found the
plaae where his air-pipe was hitched.
He carefully loosened it, gave the signal,
and was hauled up immediately. If I
understand fight; the linn was ebnr
enongh when he went down, but while ?
be was at work on the sanken ship the
tide changed, and carrying his pipe and
line in the opposite direction to that in
which it had been originally conducted,
it beoame jammed. He did not get to
the surface one instant too soon, for the
boat was jnst drifting, na her anchors
