It ran thus: "It's nigh onto elovon
years, air, einen I came on this road.
For the first three years I was brakes?
man, and if I had stuck to it I might
have become a conductor in this time
who knows. My character was good and
I've always beon a steady man, but yon
see it wasn't to be. My old woman al
ways objected tome running on the train,
it kept me so mnoh away from home, not
to speak of the danger; and, at the end
of the third year, when oar little boy
was born, she begged so hard to give it
up that I consented, and the company
pnfc me in this place where I've been ever
since. It's not hard; I've 'only got to
tend one awi tah and do odd jobs about
the depot. The pay is jost the same as
what I got before, only there's no chance
for promotion; but then I'm always at
home, which makes it up. I live only a
little way across the bridge, in the out?
skirts of the town, yonder, on the other
side of the river-a small white house
with an elm tree in the yard-yon can
see it from the other end of the switch
"So you think the riverie very beauti?
ful at this acus?n of the year? Well,
air, I dare say it is. I thought so once
myself; but I don't take any pleasure in
looking at it now, nor have I done so
for many a day. Its green banks and its
clear water, with the aunahino sparkling
on it, only makes it seem the crueler to
me, as if it laughed over the misery it
had cansed to h ti mau beings; bat my
opinions havn't got anything to do with
what yon come to ask me about, so I'll
try and get to the point at once.
"It will be three youri come Monday,
the 13th of next month, which is May,
that, after eatin' my breakfast and
smokin' my pipe, which latter operation
I generally gits through with about 7
o'clock, I started across tho bridge,
takin' with mo my little boy "Willie, who
was at thia time just riskin* o' five years.
He was awfully tickled at the idea of I
bein' allowed to go out with me, as his 1
mother kept him mostly around tho
honse, bavin', like nearly all women,
groat fear of tho trains. I don't think,
sir, I ever seen a liner momio'-the sun
well nigh up, but not too warm, with a I
white cloud hero and there in tho blue
sky, the trees ami grass green aud frosh
and glistonin' with tho dew; and under?
neath us the river, flowiu' bright and
clear, just as you seo it now, sir. My
heart folt light, and bavin' nothin' on
my mind-I had just finished payin' for
my house tho week before-I bogan to
think, on comparin* my troubles with
my blessins' that, after nil, it would be
hard to find a better place thain this same
mnah-abused world we live in.
"The time-table was a little difierent '
then from what it is now. The freight
train came down at 7:30 A. M., switched
off, and waited for the expresa to go hy,
which followed in fifteen minutes later.
I renchod tho switch about ten minutes
ahead of time-I always do-and sittiu'
down on the tie, I filled a fresh pipe and
smoked away, while little Willie gathered
fiebbles, and throwing 'em in the water,
augbed and shouted at the Bpl&sheB ho
made.
"Finally, growin' bolder, be ventured
to the river's edge, and pluckin' one of
the lilies that grew there in abundanco,
ho came in groat glee and laid it at my
feet. I pat the flower carefully in my
pocket, so as not to bruise it, intending
to show it to his mother. He lisped out
that pretty blao ones grew farther down,
and begged to go and get one of I
tthem; but as it was almost time for tho]
train, I refused my permission, and
taking him some ton or fifteen yards
from the track, sat him down at the j
foot of a tree-the maple youder-aud
bade him remain there till I called.

passed, ?nd still no signe of it. I grew
nervous, and did not notice my boy.
Minute after minute passed away, and
at last when I began to bo certain that
some accident had occurred, it hove in
sight, just livo minutes before tho ex?
press was due, which I knew could not
bo more than two miles behind. I eaw
at once tho cause of tbe delay; tho train
was unusually long and heavy, and thc
eugine, number forty-two, which the
firomen had christened 'Old Rioketty,'
was the worst on the road. Tbe switch
was all ready, but tho train moved so
slowly that tho last car bud hardly left
the main track when I heard tho whistle
of tho express, nud tho next moment
she rounded tho bend at full speed. I
kuew that I didn't have any too much
timo to get tbe switch in position, and
went at my work with a will, when sud?
denly I heard a child's scream, and turn?
ing aron ntl, I saw little Willie struggling
in the water. For an instant the sight
of tuy child's danger overpowered ovury
other consideration, and I sprang for the
river, but before I got half tho distance,
tho hoarse whistle of tho approaching
train rnug iu my oar like a trumpet, and
tho thought of my duty, and tho hun?
dreds of lives that would bo sacrificed if
I deserted my post, went through my
brain like a flash of lightning, while all
tho timo there was a feeling about my
heart I can't tell in so many words-I
only know it was worse than death-bo
seeching me to save my boy.
"Tho whole thing couldn't hove lasted
moro than two seconds, and how tho ono
feeling got the better of tho other, I
never knew. I have no recollection of
turning back, but the next thing I re?
member I was at tho switch working
away liko mad. I never had Buch
strength. I felt that I could have
wrenahed ap the solid iron rails in my
agony, and bent them like straw; and I
did not seem to Bee anything about me
distinctly, neither rails nor ties, but
dimly and vaguely, as if in a dream, or
at a great distanoe. What I did Bee as 1
Elainly as I do now, although it was ho?
rrid me, was the clear and beautiful
river, flowing on in the morning ann,
and in the midst of it little Willie weakly
strnggling for help, while the bright,
oreel waves smote him in the face and
langhed. I had no ear for the nearing
train, but all I heard-or seemed to, for
I can't rightly say-were his cries to his
father for help, growing fainter and
fainter; and then the horrible bubbling
sound, BS Be sank finally, and his last
breath fonnd its way to the surface.
fj?"At length, the switch was in position,
and althongh it's a short job at best, and
I must have accomplished it at that time
with a quickness I can never again equal,
yet it'seemed longer than tho longest
summer's day; but it was done, and 1
rushed to the river and gazed eagerly
around for some sign that might tell me
where to plunge in to resouo my child;
but there was nothing, nothing but the
snn-light that glistened brightly on the
little wavelets that smiled mockingly in
my face as they harried onward. I don't
remember anything further. There was
a great choking in my throat, a huge
weight of lead seemed to fall ou my
brain, and all was black. When I came
to my senses, it WSB three weeks after?
ward, with my old woman-God bless
her-sitting along side of me, holdiu'
my hand in hors. Tho doctor said I had
made a close miss of it, and at first I felt
sorry that I had lived at nil; but that
didn't last long, for I knew there was
another one-she who sat beside me
who had suffered more tban I had, and
stood it nobly, so I tried to get better in
order to console ber. It was two weeks
more before I got out of bed, and quite
two mouths before I was able to go
around. I will never be the same man
again.
"Tho company pensioned me, and
didn't want me to do any more work at
all. But T couldn't bear to be idle-you
see, sir, I wasn't brought up to it, and,
strango as it may appear, I didn't feel
like working anywhere save in the old
place; I seemed to bo closer to my boy
there. I found tho lily ho had gathered,
just as I bad placod it in my jacket
pocket, and gave it to his mother. Sbe
has it yet, all withered aud colorless, in
a little glass on the mantle piece, and
there, sir, it shall remain iu sight of us
both, until our timo comes to join him".
