PouTlOAL VIEWS.-The Camden Jour? nal saya: "If there is to be any restoration of good government in this State, under the existing organization of politionl forces, it mnet be by teaobing the better class of negroes higher and truer ideas of their privileges nnd duties as free citizens of a republic, and procuring their co-operation. Tho burners of prejudice against any affiliation between the classes in any politionl movement are so formidable thut few of tbe colored peoplo can bo brought to brave thom by individual effort, however clearly they may perceive the necessity and tho duty of suoli a policy. Thero must bo strength created by combinations sufficiently powerful to emancipate them from the thraldom of party dictation, and to pro toot them, socially and personally, from party proscription nud persecution. Let all the conservative elemente of our colored population combine and organ? ize as a colored conservativo party, not allied to the Radicals or the Democrats, but banded together as good citizens, determined to overcome prejudice nud hate, and seek the advancement of their race, and the security of their rights and interests, by supporting good laws and good men for office. If they begin now, by this time next year they will be in a condition to aeouro any reasonable demands peculiar to them as a class by a union with, that party whioh will aid them in procuring a good government, just and favorable to all. If the white people of this State are not prepared to meet them upon snoh principles, then there oan be no good government, no peaoe, and no prosperity to South Caro? lina, under existing conditions. At all events, if there be such a class of co? lored people amongst ns-a class which deaireB peace, amity, and a pure, honest and juBt government-willing to accord to the whites the means of self-proteo tion, wbilo securing itself-willing to 'live and. let live/ let them come out of Sodom and plant themselves upon truth, justice and the law, and we promise to meet them." Wben that work is accomplished, we may take an notive part in"Federal questions anf Presidential elections. As long as th election of State officers is made a.party question, so long shall we bo without a government in whose hands the interests of all conditions of men will be safe. But a - fair, generous and progressive State. Government may be obtained, beyond a doubt, in 1872, if the peo pie of the whole State agree, as ic Charleston, to sink, for the moment, all party differences, and devote -all their energies to tho eleotion of snob persons as will faithfully and impartially repre sent them." MABVELLOUS USE OF THE TEIIEQKAPH. G good deal of discussion is going on in the Loudon journals in' regard to the wreck of the British Government ship Megrora, whioh, following so closely on the mishap to the Agincourt, has natu? rally exalted considerable sensation. Shu had on board nearly 500 officers and men, going out chiefly to reinforce the crews of ships ia the Australian waters. The laut intelligence of her was that she was rnn asbore, in a sinking state, on the island of St. Paul, in the Indian Ocean. What tho canse of the wreck was is not yet ascertained, bat it is charged that her sea-worthiness was publicly called in question before she left, and that Che Admiralty would not listen to the remonstrances which were made. However that may bo, we wish to re? cord the marvellous uso of the tele? graph which was tandi) in connection with the disaster. Tho desert isle on which tho crow was cist is nt least 2,000 miles distant from any point nt which effectual help can be obtained, so that, beyond a plenty of tish, which, it is alleged, may be found in the streams lif the island, there was no hope of re nef, unless some ono could take the oews norosa 2,000 miles of water. Thia Lieutenant Wilson nobly succeeded in accomplishing, bearing to Batavia the intelligence of his companions' sorrow? ful plight. Batavia telegraphed the dis? astrous intelligence to London, and nlso stated that, in sending the same news by the wiro to Hong Kong, the British au? thorities there had been consulted on the best course to be pnrsned. The tele? gram was received at the Admiralty at1 5.20 P. M., on August 3d, and inqniries were instantly flashed to Bombay, Aden and Batavia, with tbe view of learning what ships migot be available for tbe relief of the Megrora. Only an hour after receipt i the first news, at 6.20, the Admiralty received a despatch from the Admiral at Hong Kong to tbe effect that a vessel hod already been chartered for the voyage to St. Paul. Thus, within an hour after the authorities iu England learned that the Megrora had been lost, they were told by their col? leagues in.Chino, at a station 1,000 miles away from the point whioh the news bad I first reached, that the necessary steps for sending aid had already been* taken. This is wonderful as a soientiflo fact, while also giving gratifying assurance that everything which could be done hon beon dono, without loss bf timo, for the unfortunate people on St. Paul's Island.
