gregationalist has discovered a communi?
ty, numbering at present abont 7,000
souls, which haa flourished for many
centuries, though no woman has ever
been permitted or known to set foot in
the country. Few of the inhabitants,
he say s, have any definite idea of what a
woman is. The whole class of ideas and
sensations ordinarily associated with the
words mother, sister, wife and sweet?
heart are to them unknown; and, what]
is equally singular, crime is also un?
known, or nearly so, while cn every side
are to be seen evidences of temperance,
piety and good order. What Anthony,
Stanton, Woodhull & Company will say

Tho home of this eccentrio but happy
pooplo is in the Easternmost of the
three peninsulas which project from tho
North coast of the Greek Archipelago.
It was anciently called Acte, now Monte
Son oto, and is abont forty miles in
length, and from two to nine miles
across. It termiuates in Mount Athos,
a conical moss of limoBtono rising abrupt?
ly to a height of 6,500 feet. Between
this bold headland and the coast is a
beautiful' plateau, clothed throughout
with woodland, which is gay with flowers,
rich with odors, merry with song-birds,
and canopied by the brightest of all blue |
skies. The cultivated fields are all di?
versified with groves of oak and chest?
nut, while olive and fig trees are there
indigenous. To this secret paradise the
eons, but not the daughters, of Eve are
admitted, and such has been the cu stom
as far back as history reaches, the penin?
sula being religiously guarded at all
points against the approach of woman,
no matter how saintly she might be.
The territory has been consecrated to
a monastic confederation of Greek Chris-1
tiona. They have twenty-three convents,
and on the hill-sides and all through thu
defiles and ravines aro scattered innume?
rable crosses and retreats, cells and her?
mitages. Though these conventuel
houses are bound together by tho tie of
religious seclusion, the history of each
is independent. Two of these monaste- j
ries claim Constantine as their founder,
two others the Empress Pulcheria. Not ]
one of the twenty-three dates its foun?
dation later than the twelfth century.
These fraternities bad the prudence to
submit to Mohammed II, prior to the
fall of Constantinople, l??d received from
him a promise of protection, which has
. been respected ever since. Though the
domain is part of the Turkish Empire,
not a rod of it is claimed in property by
the Saltan, cr a Mussulman subject. An
annual tribute of $7,500 io paid by the
peninsula, toward which the different
societies contribute their share accord?
ing to an assessment determined by their
representatives. Each convent sends a
deputy to a diet, which manages general
interests, and holds its sittings at Kajar,
a small town occupied by carvers ot
crosses, and the reeidenco of a solitary
Turkish official who collects the revenue.
The inmates are natives of every part I
of the Turkish Empire where the Greek
language is spoken, and aro consigned
to tho societies either in infancy or in
early life by their fanatical paren IB. Tho

bationer; then, if be has proved uble to
keep the monustia vows, he receives his
first tonsure and becomes a monk. Tho
discipline is severe, ordinary ohuroh ser?
vices seven hoars a day, extraordinary
fourteen, and sleep five. 150 days in
the year they have one meal only oTday,
and at this ? ggs, cheese, fish, wino ami
oil are forbidden.
Tho prohibition against women ex?
tends to tho sex universally. From timo I
immemorial no cow, mare, goose, duck,
hen, or female of any kiud, has ever
been permitted to make acquaintance
with hill or valley, farm-3 ard'or kitchen1, |
in tho Mt. Athos territory. In selecting'
maul for tho table, tho greatest caro ?B
taken to have it of tho male variety, and
a body of soldiers is employed by tho
societies to keep the sacred shores from
beiug desecrated by the tread of any fe?
male wbatsoover. Yet, in spite of all
these stringent regulations, tho birds
continue to mato, and feminine fleas and
mosquitoes to rear their young, to tho
everlasting scandal of all tho piouB old
bachelors on the peninsula. There aro
in the convents some good libraries,
containing about 50,000 volumes in all,
! and manuscripts 700 years old are by no
j means uncommon. Altogether, these
venerable malo nuns have a jolly time
of it.
