by immigrants to friends left behind,
principally to pay their passage to Ame?
rica, is rather surprising. From the
official returns of the emigrnut commis?
sioners of England, it appears that iu
1870 there was sent from this country,
to Ireland principally, 83,630,010 in
gold, of which 81,663,190 was for pre?
paid passages. lu the twenty-three
years from 1843 to 1870, inclusive, th?
money sent was upward of 831,670,000
in gold, being aa average of about
83,839,047 yearly. But this amount is
probably somewhat below the actual
amount Sent, as it only includes what
hos beon seut through banks aud com?
mercial houses. Of whatever may have
benn sent through private channels
there is no knowledge. And these sums,
large as they are, are mude up by care?
ful savings from the wages of servant
girls aud day laborers, while tho aggre?
gated deposits in the savings banks of
New England and New York, mainly at

amount to 8616,000.000.

The druggists' war in New York con?
tinues, and a few of tho pharmaceutists
stubbornly refuse to go through the ex?
amination pressribed bylaw. The com?
munity and the newspapers were forced,
by repeated drug murders, lo demand
legislation to prevent the recurrence of
fatal mistakes, and now that they have
tho law, all should stand by it. The
I board of examiners average about twen?
ty two druggists paused per day, and
this will soon reduce tho obstinate ones
to a small minority. These might be
brought to terms if the regularly li?
censed druggists nnder the law were re?
quired to display signs stating the fact,
as no one would patronize shops where
they olaim the privilege of employing
ignorant clerks.
