THE OARPKT-BAOOKR,-Tbe magic of words for good or evil is very great. A nickname has, as poetry tells ns, disho? nored or, at least, discredited, many a noble cause. An attractive, plensantly soanding phrase hos beautified many a very unworthy man or thing. "Gavalior" covers great variety of wrong, and "Roundhead" much that is good, and "Puritan," a word of delicious origin, has, according to the point of view from whioh it is regarded, all sorts of signifi? cation. Our civil war had its coinage of words, some of thom of precise and some of very loose significance. "Scalawag," a false, recreant Southern man, admit? of no equivocation. It is incarnate in Holden, Wallace, Pool, Brown, of Georgia, and others of chub dotcotcd trios, who, in the chrysalis stale, were the most bitter rebels, and now, with gaudy wings-red, whito and blue-soar as loyal butter-flies. But tho other offensive word, which is usually associ? ated with "soallawag," is loose, and ad? mits of all sorts of elevation and prosti? tution. Literally and strictly it describes those who, when the war was over, car pot-bag in hand, and with tho limited amount of oloan linen whioh a carpet? bag implies, went Sooth to botter their fortunes. It comprises, unfortunately, in its comprehensiveness the vagabond adventurer who, without character, and unable to make a living at home, with no saored or familiar ties to bind him there, migrated for mere plunder. But it also includes the many Northern men who, animated by the highest motives, and not the lesB high because fairly selfish, saw in the desolated and relatively vacant South a field where good might be done, and legitimate industry, with its fair rivalries, pursued; who went there ho? nestly to Bettie, and, if they could, assi? milate themselves-make themselves integral parts of the social aggregate. There are many snob, and it would be rank injustice to confound them with the discreditable class to which wo have re? ferred. lt in a curious and impressive fact, that many of these bona fide immi? grants wore nativo soldiers of the North. Not o? the jobbing, frolicking order of warriors who, for want of profitable oc? cupation, or in searoh of mere excite? ment, drew their swords; but earnest, perhaps fanatical men, who did duty, as duty, and obeyed the diotates of exalted and, perhaps, morbid conscientiousness. Saoh men, as a general rule, so far as there is testimony on the subject, settling in the South since the war, have made themselves welaome, and there is no in? stance of their being the objects of the least unkindness. In return, they are the men who, so far as they are allowed j to take part in public affairs, by the crowd of adventurers who jostle thom in every avenue to offioe, not with the De mooratH, and understand that the success of the Conservative party is the only means of their own material prosperity. The Tax-payers' Convention which some time ago met in Sonth Carolina had a large infusion of this immigrant ele? ment, and it spoke the voice of the sub? stance, such as it ie, and the industrial resources of the community. Let us, then, in our definition of "oarpet-bag (bm" discriminate. [ Washington Patriot. SPOON-FED MORALITY.- Gen. Butler is accused of writing to a lady who com? plained of being calumniated: "I never know tho meaning of pure, unadulter? ated enjoyment until I stood by and watched the last shred of my reputation go np in a balloon. And Butler really had the audacity to recommend virtuous women to "get rid of the last uh rmi of their reput ation," if thoy de? sired to realizo "unadulterated enjoy montl" "When you find," says tbiB . outre moralist, "that there isn't a vestige of your precious good mime loft, the' you will begin to know what comfort is. ' No doubt a very consoling dogma to in? culcate among the inmates of a "house of pleasure"-excellent ad vico for "so? cial evils" it may bo-but eau a public man address such language to modest woman and still be esteemed in a re? spectable community? Charles Surface says substantially tho same thing in tho play, but tho author makes it, in his month, tho utteranco of the recklessly licentious. Butler utters it ne the re? sult of his own experience. Verily, he deserves to be elected Qovernor of Mas? sachusetts! A moro atrociously immoral sentiment never fell from tho lip? of u social, not to say a political profligate. General Bntler is a disgrace to his party and to his position. We may well ask: "Whore aro the spoons?" when we hear a man not only avow snoli opinions, but insinuate by his language that they are entertained by honorable mon and wo? men.-New York Sunday Times.
