A BEAUTIFUL INCIDENT.-Tho follow?
ing beautiful story ia worthy to be laid
up in the memory of every one:
A poor Arab, travoling in the desert,
mot with a spring of oloar, sweet, spark?
ling water. Used as bo was only to
braokisb wolla, such water as this ap?
peared to bis simple mind worthy of a
monarch, and filling II?B leathern bottle
from tho spring, be determined to go
and present it to the Caliph himself.
The poor man traveled a long way be?
fore ho reached tho presence of his
sovereign and laid his humble offering at
his feet. The Oaliph did not despise the
little gift, brought to him with BO much
trouble. He ordered some of the water
to be poured into a oap, drank it, and
thanking the Arab with a Btnile, or?
dered him to be presented with a reward.
Tho courtiers around pressed forward,
eager to taste of the wonderful water;
hut, to the surprise of all, the Caliph
forbade them to touoh a Bingle drop.
QAfter tho poor Arab bad quitted the
royal presence with a light and. joy fol
heart, the Caliph turned to hin courtiers
and thus explained his conduct: "Dur?
ing the travels of the Arab," said he,
"the water in his leathern bottle became
impure and distasteful. But it was an
offering of love, and as such I have re?
ceived it with pleasure. But I well knew
that had I suffered another to partake of
it, he would not have concealed his dis?
gust, and, therefore, forbade you to
touoh the draught, lest the heart of tbe
poor men should have been wounded."
The aot of this Caliph was worthy of
a Christian gentleman. Bead the story
over again, think about it, and try to
remember it when some one simpler
minded than you are exposes his igno?
rance while trying to do you a service.
If you laugh and make sport as the
courtiers would have done, you show
yourself to be neither a gentleman nor a
Christian. The truly great are kind to
the humblest. It is the mean man who
treats the lowly with contempt.
WAKING GKAND-MA WITH A KISS.-A
sweet incident is related by a writer.
She says:
I asked a little hoy, last evening;
"Have you called grand-ma to tea?"
"Yes. When I went in to call ber she
was asleep, and I didn't know how to
waken her. I didn't wish to holler at
grandma, nor to shako her; so I kissed
her cheek, and that woke her very softly.
Then I ran into the ball and said, pretty
loud: 'Grand-ma, tea is ready,' and she
never knew what woke her."
Do we find anything more sweet and
delicate than this? Can conventionality
improve upon such politeness, spontane?
ous in the heart of a six years old boy?
A bare-headed, bare-footed little boy
astonished a worshiping congregation in
a Massachusetts town, on a recent Sun?
day, by rushing into church oud ex?
claiming: "Where's my papa? The pigs
are out!"
