these syrups are the pure extract of the
irait is a popular delusion. Butyrio

Butyric ot her is made sometimes of ran?
cid butter, though old rotten cheese is
generally preferred, the loudest variety
of Limburger affording the best quality
of ether. The obeeso is treated with
sulphurio acid, and if particularly nice
and finely flavored ether is desired, a
few chips of; old leather is added. * Act
sort of loather will do] bat old babes abd
shoes are preferred. Strawberry is made
of twelve parta of butyric ether and one
part of noetic ether, dilated with alcohol
and water. A pint of real strawberry
syrup added to the gallon of mixturo
will improve the ey rup, bat it is not ab?
solutely necessary ; color with cochineal.
Raspberry syrup is made after tho same
formula, exoapt tbat a pint of real rasp?
berry syrup is added, if the chemist has
it. " If not, be tokes ajar of bia straw?
berry syrup, dolors ! a little tltirker and
changea the label. Sarsaparilla is the
simplest and nastiest of the syrups.
Molasses is its base, with a little essence j
ol sassafras and wintergreen added. A
few roots of sarsaparilla "biled" in tbe
mixturo will do no harm and no good.
Vanilla eyrnp ?B made of tonqaa beans
and frosh bay. Pineapple syrup is made
of butyrio yaud -formic ether. Formic
etber waa formerly made by the action
of sulphurio acid oa red ants, bat lat?
terly is made of glycerine and soap.
- Peach .syrup is made of bitter almonds
and beatie etbetv ' Twenty dtopB^of oil j

tar is formed by mixing varions syrups
and adding a little Madeira wine, the
wine being compounded of neutral spirit,
logwood, sugar and raisins. Lemon

It is made of citric acid and sogar, with
porhaps a few lemon peels. The oitrio
acid ,is made , of lemons. Por people

AX ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING TUE CHARLOTTE AND SOUTH CARO?
LINA BAILROAD COMPANY TO LAY Dow;; AND CONSTRUCT A BAILROAD
THIIOUOH TUE STREETS OF THE TOWN OF COLUMBIA AND LOCATE .A
DETOT, AND FOB OTHER PURPOSES.
SECTION 1. Be it ordained, by thc Honorable thc Intendant and
Wardens of the Tomi of Columbia^.in Council dssembled, That 'the
Charlotte and South Carolina Bailroad Company be, and they are
hereby, authorized to lay down and construct the railroad of the
said company through the town of Columbia, along tho lino already
selected and laid down by the said company, the said line having
been selected with tho concurrenoo of the public authorities of the
said town; and they aro hereby authorized to use and occupy the
streets of the said town for the purpose of their said road, to tho
extent that the same aro now used and occupied by tho said com?
pany.
SEC. 2. And bc it further ordained, by live authority aforesaid, That
the said Charlotte and South Carolina Bailroad Company be, and
they are hereby, authorized to construct a depot within tho liniitS
of tho town of Columbia, at tho. place where the said depot has
been already laid off and in part constructed; and for this purpose
the said company shall havo and enjoy*thc exclusivo uso of so much
of "Winn street as lies between Blanding street and Laurel street;
the site for the said depot having been selected by the said com?
pany, with tile concurrence of the public authorities of the town
and citizens thereof, os being best adapted to snbservo the interests
and convenience of the said town and its citizens.
SEC. 3. lie ? further ordained, by thc authority aforesaid, That .the
said company be, and they are hereby, authorized to use steam
power, or horse powor7 or such o thor propelling power as they1 may
deem expedient along the said line of road, and in tho said depot,
within the limits of tho said town.
SEC. 4. lie? f arther ordained, by the authority aforesaid, That the
said company, in conducting their road across any pf the public
streets of the town of Columbia, shall conform strictly to,'tho
eighteenth section of tho Act of thc Legislature of this State, passed
on thc nineteenth day pf December, in tho year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and forty-eight, entitled "An Act to, pro?
duce conformity in the charters granted to the Charlotte and South
Carolina Bailroad Company by tho States of North dihd South
Carolina."

after distinguished by tho name of Blanding street.

DAY OF JULY, A. D. 1859.
Be it ordained, by the. Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Columbia,
in Council assemltled, and by the. authority of thc same, That an ordi
dinanco entitled "An ordinance to regulato tho assize of^ bread,"
passed on the 19th day of July, A. D. 1859, bc, and the samo is
hereby, ropealed, and made of non-effect.
