tho pulpit covered with black gauze, be?

cesses of black drapery, whioh covered
ever; statue except those of the Virgin
and oh.ild and St. Denis, the first bishop
of Paris. In the midst of all were the
black and charred romains of the
bishop's chair and his throne, also half

deavored to burn the Cathedral. The
Cathedral was left intact, us. a memento
of the crime.

NEW ORLEANS, June 7-Midnight.-A
strong' South-east wind, with rain on
Lako Ponchartrain, this evening.. The
water in the city has fallen two inches
in tko past twenty-four hours.- It is now
three inches below high water mark.
The neutral ground on Canal street is
clear of water nearly to Claiborne street.
Besides police and charity boats, there
are hundreds of small crafts engaged in
the passenger trafilo, and aro as thick
around the neutral grounds on Canal
street as vehioles at a raoe course; and
the boatmen are as solicitous for patron?
age as depot cabmen. The boats are re?
quired to curry lights, and alter dark the
spectacle is interesting. 5,000 loaves of
bread and other articles in proportion
aro distributed . daily. A disagreeable
odor arises all along tho border of the
overflowed district, caused by stagnant
water and decaying vegetables and
animals.
SAN FRANCISCO, June 7.-Mrs. Fair is
said to have paid to her connsel and
physioiaus, who testified to her insanity
and attended her professionally, for
hunting up witnesses and other expenses
of the trial, already $20,000. Dr. J. B.
Trnsk, her principal medical attendant
and witness, now sues her for $2,000
more.
