time and attention to tho study of long dis
bases and consomption. I feel that I under?
stand fully the course that ought to be pur?
sued to restore a tolerably bad case of diseased
lungs to healthy soundness. The first and
most important step is for tho patient to
avoid taking cold, and tho beat of all plaaos
on this continent for this purposo in winter,
is Florida, well down in tho State, where tho
tomperaturo ia regular, and not subject to
such variations SB in more Northern latitudes.
Palatka is a point I can recommend. A good
hotel is kopt ibero by Poterman. Last win?
ter I saw several portons thcro whoso lunga
had been badly diseased, but who, under tho
healing influence of tho climate aud my medi?
cines, wcro getting well.
Uno hundred miles further down the river
is a point which I would profcr to Palatka, as
tim tomperaturo is more cvon and tho air dry
and bracing.' Mellonvillo and Enterprise aro
localed thoro. I should givo a decided pre?
ference to Mellonvillo. It is two miles from
river or lake, and it accmB almost impossible
to tako cold there. Tho tablea in Florida
might bo better, and patients complain at
times, but that is a good aign, aa it indicates
a return of aupe ti to, aud when tbiH is tho case
(hoy generally in crease in llcsb, and then the
lungs must bea!.
Jacksonville, Hibernia, Oreen Cove, and
many other places in various parts of Florida,
can bo safely recommended lo consumptives
in winier. My reasons for saying BO are that
patients aro lesa liable to take cold thcro than
where there is a less even temperature, and it
ia not necessary to*say that where a consump?
tive person esposes himself to frequent colds,
ho is certain to dio shortly. Therefore, my
advico ia, go well down into tho state, out of
tho reach of prevailing East winda and fogs.
Jacksonville, or almost any other of tho lo?
calities I have named, will benefit those who
are troubled with a torpid liver, a disordered
stomach, deranged bowoln, aoro throat or
cough, but for those whoso lunga aro diseased
a moro Southern point ia earnestly recom?
mended.
For fifteen years prior to 18G9,1 waa profes?
sionally in New York, Boston, Ballimore and
Philadelphia every week, whero I Baw and ex?
amincd on an average five hundred patients a
week. A practico so extensive, embracing
every possible pim s o of lung dist aso, bas ena?
bled mo to understand tho disenso fully, and
heneo my caution in regard to taking cold. A.
person may take vast quantities of "echehok's
Pnlmonic Syrup, Seaweed Tonic and Man?
drake Pills,'* and yet dio if ho doea not avoid
taking cold.
lu Florida, noarlv everybody ia using
Schenck's Mandrake Pills; for tho climato is
more likely to produco bilious habits than
moro Northern latitudes. It is a well estab?
lished fact that natives of Florida rarely dio
of consumption, especially those of the South?
ern part. On tho other hand, iu New Eng?
land, one-third, at least, of tho population
die of this terriblo disenso. In tho Middlo
Stales it docs not prevail BO largely, atill
thoro aro many thousands of cases thcro.
What a vast per ct-ntagc of lifo would bo saved
if consumptives wore as easily alarmed in re?
gard to taking freak cold as they are about
scarlet fever, small-pox, Ac. But they aro
not. They tako what tboy term a little cold,
which they aro crednloua enough to bolievo
will wear off in a fow days. They pay no at?
tention to it, and boneo it laya the foundation
for another aud another still, until the lungs
are diseased beyond all hope for cure.
My advice to persona whose lungs are
affected even slightly is, to lay in a stock of
Schenck's Pnlmonic Syrup, Scheuck'B Seaweed
Tonic and Schenck's Mandrake Tilla and go
to Florida. I recommend theae particular
medicines because I am thoroughly acquaint?
ed with their action. I know that whero they
are used in strict accordance with my direc?
tions, they will do tho work that is required.
Thia accomplished, nature will do the rest.
The phyeician who preacribOB for cold, cough
or.night-Bweats, and then advises tho patieut
to walk or ride out every day, will be suro to
havo a comae on his hands before long.
My plan ia to give my three medicines, in
accordance with tho printed directions, ex?
cept in some cases whero a freer uso of the
Mandrake Pills ?B necessary. My object is to
give tone to tho stomach-to got up a good
appotito. It is always a good sign when a
patient begins to grow hungry. I have hopea
of euch. With a relish for food and tho
gratification of that relish cornea good blood,
and with it more llesh, which is closely fol?
lowed by a healing of tho luugB. Then tho
cough loosens and abates, the creepingchills
and clammy uight-sweata no longer prostrate
and annoy, and tho patient gota well, provid?
ed ho avoids taking cold.
Now mero are mauyconsumptives who have
not tho means to go to Florida. The question
may bo asked, ia thcro no hope for such?
Certainly there is. My advico to such is. and
over has beun, to stay in a warm room during
tho winter, with a temperature of about
seventy degrees, which should bo kept
regularly at that point, by means of a ther?
mometer. Let such a patient take bia ex?
ercise within tlie limits of Ibo room by walk?
ing up and down aa much aa bia strength wiil
permit, in order to keen np a healthy circula
rlon of the blood. I nave cured thousands
by this system, and can do BO again. Con?
sumption is aa easily cured as any other
disease, if taken iu time, and tho proper kind
of treatment is pursued. Tho tact stauds
undisputed on record that 8chonck'a Pnlmo?
nic Syrup, Mandrake Pills, aud Seaweed Tonic
have cured very many of what seemed to bo
hopeless cases of consumption. Go where
you will, you will bo almost certain to lind
nome poor consumptive who lias been rescued
from thc very jaws of death by their use.
So tar as the Mandrake Pills aro concerned,
everybody should keep a supply of thom on
band; They act on the liver better than calo?
mel, and leave nono of its hurtful effects be?
hind. In fact, they are excellent in all cases
where a purgative medicine ia required, lt
you have partaken too freely of fruit and
diarrho-a ensues, a dose of the .Mandrakes
will cure yon. If you are subject to Bick
headache;take a dose of tho Mandrakes and
they will relievo you in two hours. If you
would obviate tho effect bf a change nf water;
or tho too freo indulgence in fruit, Hake
one of thu Maudrakca every night or every
other night, and you may then drink water
and eat watermelons, pears, apples, ninnis,
peaches or corn, without the risk of being sick
by them. They will protect tboeo who live in
damp situations against chills and fevers.
Try them. They are perfectly harmless.
They can do you good utily.
