stand fully the.course that, ought to be pur?
sued t? restore a tolerably bad case of diseased
lungs to healthy soundness. Tho first and
most important step is for the .patient' to
avoid taking oold, and the boat'of. all placee
on this continent for thia pur pos o in winter,
is Florida, well down in tho State, where the
temperature is regular, and not subject to
ouch variations as in more Northern latitudes.
Palatka is a point I can recommend. A good
hotel is kept thoro hyPetorman. Last win?
ter I saw sevoral portons thoro whoso lungs
had boen badly diseased, hut who, undor tbe
healing infiuenco of tho climate aud my medi?
cines, woro getting well.
Ono hundred miles further down the river
is a point which I would prefer to Palatka, aa
tho tomporaturo is moro even and tho air dry
and bracing. Mcllonvillo and Enterprise aro
located there. I should givo a decided pre?
ference to Mcllonvillo. lt is two milea from
river or lako, and it seems almost impossible
to take cold there. Tho tables iii Florida
might bo better, and patients complain at
times, but that ie a Rood sign, ns il indicates
a return of appetite, and when ibis is tho case
Ihey generally ihcreaso in flesh, and then tho
lungs must heal.
Jacksonville, Hibernia, Green Cove, and
many other placcB in various parts of Florida,
can bo safely recommended to consumptives
iu winter. My reasons for saying so are Hint
patients aro less liablo to take cold there thnn
where there ia a IOBS oven temperature, and it
is not necessary to Bay that whero n consump?
tive person exposes himself to frequent colds,
he is certain to dio shortly. Therefore, my
advico is, go well down into tho State, out ol
tho reach of prevailing East winda mid fogs.
Jacksonville, or almost any other of tho lo?
calities I havo named, will benefit those who
aro troubled with a torpid liver, a disordered
stomach, deranged bowels, Boro throat or
cough, but for thoso whoso lungs nre diaeaaod
a moro Southern point is earnestly recom?
mended.
For flltcou years prior to 1800,1 waa profes?
sionally in New York, boston, Baltimore and
Philadelphia every week, where 1 saw and ex?
amined ou an average five hundred patients a
week. A practico BO extensive, embracing
every possible phase of luug diet aso, baa ena?
bled mo to understand tho disease fully, and
hence my caution in regard to taking cold. A
person may tako vast quantities of "sJchcnck'a
Pulmonic Syrup, Seaweed Tonic and Man?
drake P?IIB," and yet die if he does not avoid
taking cold.
lu Florida, nearly everybody is using
Schmidt's Mandrake Fills, for the climate iy
more likely to nrudnco bilious babita than
moro Northern latitudes. It is a well estab?
lished fact thal natives of Florida rarely die
of con&uinption, especially those of the South?
ern part. On tho oilier hand, in New Eng?
land, one-third, at least, of the population
dio of thia terriblo diseuse. In thc Middle
States it docs not prevail so largely, still
there aro many thousands of cases there.
What a vast percentage of lifo would be saved
if consumptives were aa easily alni med in re?
gard to laking fresh cold cs they arc about
scarlet fevor, emall-pox, ic. But they arc
not. They tako what they term a little cold,
which they aro credulous euough to believe
will wear off in a fow days. They pay no at?
tention to it, and heneo it lays tho foundation
for another and another still, until tho lungs
aro diseased beyond all hope for euro.
My advico to persons whoso lunga are
affected even slightly is, to lay in a stock of
Hcheuck's Pulmonic Syrup, Schenck's Seaweed
Tonic and Schenck's Mandrake Pills and go
to Florida. I recommend theso particular
medicines becaneo I am thoroughly acquaint?
ed with their action. I know that where they
aro used iu strict accordance with my direc?
tions, they will do tho work that ia required.
This accomplished, nature will do tho rest.
Tho physician who prescribes for cold, cough
or night-awcatB, and then advises tho patient
lo walk or ride out every day, will be sure to
have a comae on his hands before long.
My plan is to give my three mediciuea, in
accordance with the printed directions, ex?
cept in somo cases where a freer nao of tho
Mandrake Pills is necessary. My object is to
givo tone to the Btomaeh-to get up a good
appetite It is always a good sign when a
patient begins to grow hungry. I havo hopes
of such. With a relish for food and tho
gratification of that relish comes good blood,
and with it more flesh, which is closely fol?
lowed by a bealing of tho langs. Then tho
cough loosens and abates, the creeping chills
and clammy night-sweata no longer prostrate
and annoy, and tho patient gets well, provid?
ed he avoids taking cold.
Now thoro are many consumptives who have
not tho means to go to Florida. The quest ion
may bo asked, is there no hopo lor auch?
Certainly there in. My advico to such in, and
ever has boon, to slay in a warm room during
tho winter, with a temperature of about
seventy degrees, which should bo kept
regularly at that point, by means of a ther?
mometer. Let such a patient tako his ex?
orcise within tho limits of tho room by walk?
ing up and down as much aB II?B strength wiil
permit, in order to keep up a healthy circula?
tion of tho blood. I have cured thousands
by Ibis system, and can do so again. Con?
sumption is aa easily cured aa any other
disenso, if taken iu time, and the proper kind
of 11 eat mont ia pursued. Tho fact stands
undisputed on record that Schenck's Pulmo?
nic Syrup, Mandrake Fills, and Seaweed Tonic.
have cured very many of what seemed to be
hopeless liases of eon sumption. Go where
you will, you will be almost certain to find
some poor consumptive who has been rescued
from tho very jaws of death by their use.
So tar as t?io Mandrake Pills aro concerned,
everybody should keep a supply of them on
band. They net on the liver bettor than calo
mei, and leave nono of its hurtful effects be?
hind. Iii fact, they are excellent in all canes
where a purgativo medicino is required. Il
you havo partaken too froelj of fruit ntid
dian lona ensues, a dose of tho Mandrakes
will euro you. If you ure subject to sick
headache, take a dose of the Mandrakes anil
they will relievo you in two hours. If you
would obviate tho effect of a change of water,
or Hie too free indulgence iii fruit, ft uko
