Tho following stanzas will find an echo in

"About the year 1813 a wealthy North
Carolina planter named Pollock, tho
owner'of 15,000 slaves, was a regular
visitant at Saratoga Springs."
[Saratogian.
So bo was. We knew Pollock inti?
mately." -He was, indeed, a wealthy
planter. 4 The 15,000. slaves mentioned
- by tho Saratogian were merely some that
he kept about the house to wait on him.
The hoik of his property of that species
was kept off on his plantations. The
Government used to rofuso to take the
census in North Carolina because it
couldn't afford to pay the expense of
counting Pollock's negroes.

IP KO to Florid? In "Winter-Having for
the last thirty-flvo years devoted my whole
time and attention to the Btudy of long dis?
eases and do H a ump lion, I feel that bundor
stand fully tbo< course tn at ought to bo pur?
sued to restore a tolerably bad caso of diseased
lungs to healthy soundness, -Tho first and
moat important stop ia for tho patient to
avoid taking cold, and the beat of all places
on this continent for thia purpose in winter,
ia Florida, well down in tho otate, where tho
temperature is regular, and not subject to
such variations as in more Northern latitudes.
Palaiks. is a point I can recommend. A good
hotel is kept thcro by Poterman. Last win
tor I saw several persons there whoso lunge
had been badly diseased, but who, uudor the
healing influence of the climate and my medi?
cines, woro getting well.
Une huudrod miles further down thc river
is a point which I would prefer to Putatka, as
tho temperature is moro even and thc air dry
and bracing. Mellon ville and Enterprise aro
located there. I should givo a decided pre?
ference to Meikleville. It is two miles from
river or lake, and it seems almost impossible
lo take cold there. Thc tables in Florida
might bo better, and patients complain al
times, but that is a good sign, as it indicates
?i return of appetite, and when this is tho case
they generally increase in flesh, and then thc
lungs must heal.
Jacksonville, Hibernia, Green Cove, and
many other places io various parts of Florida,
can be safely recommended to consumptives
ia winter. My reasons for saying so are that
patients an; less liable to lake"cold there than
where lhere is a less even temperature, and it
is not necessary to say that where a consump?
tive person exposes himself to frcqnent colds,
ho is certain to dio shortly. Therefore, my
advice is, go well down into tho State, rut ot
the reach of prevailing East winds and fogs.
Jacksonville, or almost any other of tho lo?
calities I have named, will benefit thoso who
aro troubled with a torpid liver, a disordered
stomach, deranged bowels, soro throat or
cough, but for those whose lungs aro diseased
a moro Southern point is earnestly recom?
mended.
For liltceti years prior to 18.G9,1 was profes?
sionally in New Vork, boston, Baltimore and
Philadelphia every week, where I saw and ex?
amined on an average live hundred patienta a
week. A practice so extensive, embracing
every possible phase of lung disease, bas ena?
bled mo to understand the disease tully, anet
hence my caution in regard tn toking cold. A.
person may lake vast quantities of "Schcnck'a
Pulmonic Syrup, Seaweed Tonic and Man?
drake Pills,' and yet dio if he does not avoid
taking cold.
In Florida, nearly everybody is using
Schcnck'a Mandrake Pills, for the climate is
more likely lo produce bilious habits than
moro Nortbern latitudes, lt is a well estab?
lished fact that natives of Floriela rarely die
of consumption, especially those of thc South?
ern part. On I lie other hand, in New Eng?
land, one-third, at least, ol" the population
die Of this terrible disease. In the Muidle
States it does not prevail sn largely, still
thnu aie many thousands of cases there.
What a vast percentage of lite would bo httved
if consumptives were as easily alarmed in re?
gard Lu taking fresh cold as they are about
scarlet fever, small-pox, Sie. But they arc
not. They take what they term a little cold,
which they aro credulous enough to believe
will wear ofl in a few days. They pay no at?
tention to it, and hence il lays the foundation
for another and auotht r still, until the lungs
are diseased beyond all hope for cure.
My adyic? lo persons whoso lungs aro
affected even slightly is, to lay in a btock of
Kchenck's Pulmonic Syrup, Schcnck's Seaweed
Tonic and Sehenck's Mandrake Tills and go
lo Florida. I recommend these particular
medicines because I am thoroughly acquaint?
ed with their action. 1 know that where they
are used in strict accordance with my direc?
tions, they will do tho work that ia required.
This accomplished, natura will do tho rest.
The physician who prescribes for cold, cough
or night-sweats, and then advises the patient
to walk or ride out every day, will bo bure to
have a t or?se on his hands before long.
My plan ?8 to give my three medicines, in
accordance with tho printed directions, ex?
cept in some cases whero a freer uso of the
Mandrake Pills is accessary. My object is to
give tone to the stomach-to get up a good
appetite. It is always a good eigu when a
patient begins lo grow hungry. I have hopes
of such. :. With a relish for food and tho
gratification of that relish conies good blood,
and with it more flesh, which is closely fol?
lowed by a healing of the lungs. Then tho
cough loosens and abates, the creeping chills
and clammy night-sweats no longer prostrate
and aunoy.and the patieut gels well, provid?
ed he avoids taking cold.
Now mere are many consumptives who have
not tho moans to go to Florida. Thc quest ion
may bo asked, is thcro no hope for such?
Certainly there is. My advice to such ia, and
ever has been, to stay in a warm room during
tho winter, with a" temperature of about
seventy degrees, which should be kept
regularly at that point, by means of a ther?
mometer. Let such a patient tako his ex?
ercise within tho limits of the room by walk?
ing up and down as much as his strength wiil
permit, iii ordor lo keep np a healthy circula?
tion of the blood. I have cured thousands
by this system, and can do so again. Con?
sumption ia as easily cured SB any other
disease, if taken in time, and the proper kind
of treatment is pursued. The fact stands
undisputed on record that Schcnck's Pulmo?
nic Syrup, Mandrake Tills, and Seaweed Tonic
have curcd very many of what seemed to bo
hopeless cases of consumption. Go where
you will, you will be almost certain to lind
somo poor consumptive who has been rescued
from the very jaws of death by their use.
So far aa thc Mandrake Pills are concerned,
evervbodv should keep a supply of them on
hand. They act on the liver better than calo?
mel, ami leave none of its hurtful effects bc
hintl. In fact, they arc excellent in all caeos
where a purgative* medicine ia required, li
you have partaken too freely of fruit and
diarilnea ensues, a dose of tho Mandrakes
will cure yon. If you are subject to sick
headacho, take a dose of the Mandrakes and
they will ruiicTC you in two hours. If yon
would obviate the effect of a change of water,
<.r the? too free indulgence in rruit, take
one of the Mandrakes every night or every
other night, and you may then drink water
ami eat wate:melons, pears, apples, plums,
peaches or corn, H ithout the rii-k of being sick
hy them. They ?ill protect Hmso who live- iii
damp situations against chills und fevers.
Try them. They are perfectly hauulees;
They can (lo you good ?lily.
