If your clothes breathed a delicious fragrance-say of heliotrope or roses-blit would do BO only when you H?re*at home, or only when you wont abroad, which would you choose? Would you smell sweet at homo, or wheu y'd? went away from home? Would you have a perpetual climate of rare odors in your own house, or elsewhere? Of course, you would havo it at home for your own comfort and enjoyment, you onrmudgeon, if for nothing else. But what is domestic courtesy but the breath of heliotropes and roses at home? It is aar much for your own pleasure that yon should be pleasant as it is for that of others. The happiest household in the . world in that in whioh courtesy is new every morning and fresh every evening, like the celestial benedictions. How many of us, brethren and sisters, make borne tho rag-bag of ill-humors and caprices, and wretched moods of every kind, while wo carefully ludo them from the stranger? When tho guest arrives wo slide a chair over the rent in the carpet, and slip n tidy over tho worn edge of the sofa-cushion, and lay a pret? tily bound book over tho ink stuiu upon the parlor table-cloth; and so nt his coming the flying hair is smoothed, and the sudon look is gilded with a smile, and the eonr tone is suddenly wonderful? ly sweet. Shriveled old autumn blooms in a moment into rosy spring. And how is a yonth to know that this h OUSG, w??i? everything seems to smile, is not always as warm uud sunny as he linds it? Yet the young woman, so nently dressed, BO quietly mannered, so fascinating to the young man, may be the most "iuefij cient" of humuu beings. Still ho cnn never know it until it is too late. He cannot put it to the proof. He takes the divinity npou trust. All that ho knows is that sho is a woman, aud that he loves. And whether he thinks that household intelligence nod thrift, and endless cour? tesy como by nature, like Dogberry's reading and writing, or whether he as? sumes that, having a mother, his peer? less princess bns been carefully taught all tho duties of a queen, or whether, as is most probuble, ho knows only he loves, the duty of the parent is still the same. * * But to the ordeal of the household who can come too well prepared? Aud what parent, what human being who buB learned by experience, but would gladly equip every child with tho most perfect equipment? No, Dorinda June, to whom the youth, crusty at homo, will presently come sweetly smiling, it is not tho flow? ing bair, and the graceful dress, and tho bloom upon the cheek, and the soft lus? tre of the eye, that will mako homo hap? py. No, nor is it his horses, and plate, and the luxury and easo ho promises. If he is harsh, and short, and crabbed, what if he has ?50,000 a year? If you are careless, and ignorant, and helpless, tba viotim instead of ruler of your house, what if your eyes are black, and your cheeks a dim carnatiou? And you, dear sir and madam, who permit that boor to sit Burly at the table, and to growl in monosyllables at home, you who suffer that fair-faced girl to grow up ut? terly unequal to tho duties to which sho will be called, you are responsible. "I am one of those whose lot in life bas been to go out in an unfriendly world at an early age; and in twenty families in which I made my home, in the course of nine years, there were only three that could be designated as happy families, and the source of trouble was not so much the lack of love as the lack of care to manifest it." The closing words of this sentence give us the fruit? ful source of fumily alienations, of tho heart-aches innumerable, of sad faces and gloomy home circles. "Not so much the lack of love as the lack of care to mauifest it." What a world of misery is suggested by this brief remark 1 Not moro than three hap? py families in twenty! and the cause so manifest, so easily remedied! Ah, in the small courtesies of life, what power re? sides in a look, u word, a tone, how much of happiness, or disquietude may be communicated. Think of it, reader, and take the lesson home with yon.
