THE DAILY 'Let our Jutt Censure Attend tho True Event." BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C.. SUNDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 9, 1870. VOL. VI-NO. 174. Warning Well Heeded. Most ro?ders are familiar with tho naffife, and -very many with*"lb.?"writings', of tho celebrated geologist, tho "Oro marty 8tone-mason, Hugh Miller. His books aro read wherever tho English language is spoken ; and yet his educa? tional advantages were far inferior to thoBe ot the poorest boy in Philadelphia. What to ordinary lads is a disadvantage was to him a benefit. He selected tho trade of a stone-mason, because he observed that men in that occupation, though hard-worked during several months in a year, aro foroed to intermit their labor in the winter season. The months which, to a lad without a purpose, would be mouths of peril, were to him a Season of intellectual labor. By im? provement of all his leisure in study, he acquired the knowledge which made hts life useful and his nnmo famous. If all apprentices, and all men, indeed, who are compelled to desist from their trades duringoertuin seasons, thus utilized their off weeks or months, wo should not meet so many idle boys, dissipated and im? provident mon. Often do people blame circumstances for their failure; when, in troth, the very circumstances which they presentas excuses for their idleness might be mado tho meaus of their improve? ment. While tho "Cromarty mason" wa? yet young, be mada another resolve and ad? hered to it, one in which everybody might follow him. Ho undertook to finish out tho day with his books, but "tho letters danced before his eyes," and study or oven concentration of thought was not possible Yet ho had drank but one glass of whiskey. He resolved that such a cause should never again defraud him of his time, and he ndhered to bis reso? lution. Hugh Miller's experience with tho ono first glass is the exp?rience of most young men. It confuses aud inca? pacitates them for clear thinking, and for application. The system must become accustomed to the foreign stimulus, be? fore strong dunk eau bo taken and the mind not be dimmed. Habit deadens tho sonso, but by tho time that the habit is formed it is discovered that tho "pleasant" effect is not reached by ot a glass. More must be taken, aud at last it requires mauy to put the drinker in a working condition. For tho glass which at first co nf used becomes at las', in thc estimation of tho drinker, necessary to enable him to think or to act. An appe? tite is formed which is unappeasable, and the unfortunate victim of bis own irre? solution is put in a condition of body and mind from which it is a bard task, involving a terrible ordeal, to restore himself. Still, he eau do it, if ho will. And he must do it, or forfeit his best hopes of health, wealth and advance? ment. Those, then, to whom the use of ex? citing beverages hos not yet become n habit should resolve that the habit never shall be formed. At tho time when Hugh Miller turned short off from the indul? gence, it was less easy to decline such indulgence than it is now. Drinking whiskey in his country, and with his working companions, was the rulo, and abstinence was the exception. Then a young man was put to some trouble to find an excuse for not complying with a bad custom. Now it is quite as easy to avoid drinking habits as to fall into them. There are thousands who "touch not, tasto uot, handle not," and they are the provident and successful. It is not pretended that there aro no persons ex? cept those who abstain entirely who suc? ceed. No good cause is served by reck? less assertion. But as everybody is not master of his appetite in the desire for intoxicating beverages, the young man is safest who lets an uncalled for experi? ment alone, and who is satisfied to know that he eau safoly abstaiu, whether he oonld safely. indulge or not. Ho who can "drink in moderation" is no better off in any respect than he who avoids inebriating drinks, while the latter hus the advantage in the avoidance of a source of great and useless expense. And he has, moreover, the comfortable feeling of security for himself, and the confidence of his friends in his future. No mau who kuows tho world can look without some feeling of distrust and ap? prehension at tho youth who is already ablo to "carry off" strong potations. Tho better ht eau apparently endure them, tho stronger is the evidence that tho chains are already fastened, which can only be broken with infinite diffi? culty, if at nil.
