8,000 men, advanced about tho middle of
Decombor to the relief of Montevideo,
which was closely invested by tho Victo?
rinos and over confident rebels, who,
6,000 strong, thought the campaign de?
cided in their favor. When Suarez ap?
peared, the rebels were compelled to
relinquish all the advantages obtained,
raise the siege, and start oif iu order to
ooofrout and defeat him if possible
Tho two armies met at Sierra do Minas.
Gen. Suarez endeavored to avoid a ge?
neral engugemeut, on account of dispa?
rity in Dumbers, as the Government was
trying by al) menus to reinforce him with
infautry and artillery. Suarez received
reinforcement to tho number of 1,600
men, took tho offensive, and gavo battle
on the river Sance, ou Christmas day,
repulsing the rebels, capturing some ol
their artillery aud remaining in posses
sion of the field. Tho Government
forces slaughtered every rebel prisoner
and wounded mau left on the field. The
rebel army has nineo retreated 200 miles,
buming and destroying everything in
their path, haviug collected and driven
before them every horse, mule und sheep
they could find. Tho Government baa,
nineo the above eveuts, proclaimed am?
nesty to all who mny present themselves
to the competent authorities withiu thir?
ty days from tho 5th. A largo number
of persous have availed themselves" of
this act of clemency from the Govern
ment.
THE ATLANTIC CAULKS.-It is au
nonuced that thu broken Atlantic cables
cannot be repaired for some lime, us the
lost attempt to grapple for the cable has
proved unsuccessful, and tho repair
steamer has been so much injured that
ehe cannot return to thc work sooner
than next June. The only menus of
transmitting news until that timo will be
the French cable. When tho repair
steamer has been refitted she will return
to tho spot whero the injury occurred,
which is ubout sixty-five miles from
Heart's Content, and lay a hew cable, so
as to clear the rooky ledgo which, it is
stated, caused the fracture. Should this
method be found impracticable, a heavy
cable will bo ueeded over the dangerous
spot so ns to hold on steadily n.id prc- j
vent chating. The maintenance of tele
graphic communication across tho At-1
lantio is not so easy aud simplo a mal tet?
as was ones supposed, and it is, there?
fore, suggested that a short route for
ateamers should be adopted. By thc
latter plan, a steamer would ruu from
Valentia, Ireland, to Sf. John, New?
foundland. Passengers might then be
conveyed by railroad across the island of
Newfoundland to St. George's Buy, and
then by steamer to Bay Chaleur. The
distance between Valentin and St. Johu
is 1,600 miles, and swift steamers, it is
stated, would make the ruu in four and
a half or five days. For carrying out
this project, the construction of a rail?
road across Newfoundland is absolutely
necessary, another railroad from Bay
Chaleur across tho province of New
Brunswick to connect with the Maine
roads must also be built. By this route,
when completed, it is asserted that pas?
sengers nod mails eau pass from Londou
to Now York in six days.
A telegraph operator, named Clark, on
his way to Mobile, jumped off a train aud
was killed. Delirium tremens.
