recent discreditable affair at' Weat Point
ia bj no means the pn)y one in winch
Qad?t Grant has been engaged. Ile baa
exercised an influence, through, the.
President, calculated to datnnge tho
discipline of the Academy. Last sum
mer, he oame to Washington, and by
personal representations was enabled to
Curry back an order which abrogated the
p??i?hmeut infliuted upon one of bis
.^churns" for improper conduct; nud
nearly led to the removal of the very
Srofessor who had only discharged bis
nty in imposing that penalty. All
courts-mnrti il have become mere farces
when incriminated cadets have influence
cpough to get the findings set aside.
And this has been tho constant experi?
ence since General Grant became Presi?
dent. The Superintendent eonsults the
views or anticipates tho wishes of tho
authorities here, and consequently the
institution is every duy declining from
the absence of healthy discipline.

Tho sou of the lion. Moses II. Grinuell,
now in Africa, has been exploring the
cataracts of the Nile in an iron boat of

His letter, dated on New Year's day,
written at, Ko m sba, Nubia, describes the
ascent of enc cf thc cataracts, which wiw*
accomplished by a force of 200 men
banting upon four ropes. Seven letters
written by this gentleman, and posted
on the bauks of the Nile* have reached
their destination. They are curried a
distance of 400 miles, by relays of boys,
eaob nf whom goes teu miles, with thu
letters strapped about bis waist in belts.
Mr. Grinuell is accompanied by bis wife.
