VOL. VI-NO. 174.
SOOTH CAROLINA LUNATIC ASYLUM,
COLUMBIA, February 17, 1871.
Mn. EDITOR: Abont three months ago,
I received a letter from the Commission?
ers of the Poor of Allegheny City, Pa.,
relative to one Priscilla Miller, who, a
few days previous, had been pieked up
on one of the streets of that city, in what
appeared to be an epileptic paroxysm.
She was in a most destitute aondition,
and told the following story : That she
had been au inmuto of the South Caro?
lina Lunatic Asylum in Charleston; that
she was discharged from that institutiou
in the winter of 1870; that when BIIO
left the Asylum, the Superintendent sent
an attendant to accompany her to Pitts?
burg, Pa., where elso had a brother liv?
ing; that when they arrived at York, Pa.,
the attendant robbed her of her money
and deserted her; that she was left in
York without friends and without money ;
that through tho kiuduess of the rail?
road offioials, she was able to reach her
destination, but could not find her bro?
ther; that she was anxious to return to
her friends in South Carolina, kc. Bo?
ing in total ignorance of her history, no
one here, UB far as I could ascortain,
knowing anything of such person, and
nothing on tho books of tho State. Asy?
lum to show that she was ever an inmate
of this institution, and thinking she
might bave'been in one of tho hospitals
in Charleston, I sent the Commissioners'
letter to Dr. Robert Lebby, City Regis?
trar of Charleston, who made diligent
inquiry iuto the matter, but could lind
no record of any such person us "Pris?
cilla Miller" in any of the hospitals of
that city.
Last night, I received the enclosed let?
ter, addressed on the envelope, "Dr.
Mark Binney, Superintendent Insane
Asylum, Columbia, S. C." I send you
thin statement and tho letter, in order
that if Priscilla has any friends iu this
locality, they may leurn her present
whereabouts nnd condition, and give, (if
they desire to do so,) Mr. Randolph the
information he seems so earnestly to de?
sire in behalf of a benighted nnd dis?
tressed fellow-mortal. Murk Ranney is
not and never was Superintendent of thc
South Carolina Lunatic Asylum, and
may never have been born, for aught I
know.
There is evidently a screw loose some?
where, and I have no doubt but that it
is in this poor lady's braiu. Respectful?
ly, &c, J. F. ENSOR,
Superintendent.
DELAWARE, OHIO, February 10, 1871.
Dr. Mark Ranncy-DEAR Sm: There
is now, and has boen Bince Saturday
evening, tho 4th instant, in a portion ol
the house in which I live, a lady, calling
herself Mrs. Priscilla Miller, who soerm
by spells to be, and, in fact, has severa
times been attacked by spasms in thc
shape of epilepsy. She states that six
left your city about the 23d of January
last; that she came along all right vit
"Washington City to tho city of Balti
more, where she was robbed of bei
pocket-book, containing her througl
ticket, together with ber trunk check
the keys to her trunk and about $100 ii
money. She says that the excitemen
of mind which would naturally attenc
anything of that kind completely upse
her, and she was taken with thesi
spasms, and thereby became unable ti
proceed farther for a time; that in tin
meantime she wrote to her brother, win
lives within sixteen miles of this place
who sent her fifty dollars, with a portioi
of which ribo paid her expenses in'Balti
more and bought a ticket to Columbus
Her trunk was in her possession af te
the robbery, and that the railroad mei
at Baltimore told her it ?boula be foi
warded to Columbus, whioh it seems ha
not been done, whioh I shall speak c
hereafter.
She came here, as I said, and lande
at our railroad depot from the 3.26 A
M. train North, on tho morning of Feb
mary 2, when she was immediate!
seized with one of her spells, und viv
taken to the nearest hotel, and ther
oared for until Saturday, the 4th, a
stated above, when she must have wat
der?d away from there, she does nc
seem to know how, and was found u
the sidewalk, opposite where she now i
in a spasm. She was brought into tl
house, and taken charlo of by the tow
trustees, and has been well cared for t
a family in (as I said) a part of the hom
in whioh I live, and where, at her ri
quest, I now write.
AB to the trunk, feeling au interest i
her welfare, and being a member of tl
I. O. O. F., I volunteered to accompac
her to Columbus, which is only twent
four miles distant, to assist her as
might in the discovery of her trun
After making full inquiry, I found th
the trunk had not yet arrived, whit
upset her again, and she hud several
those spells on the way homo. She
now quiet, and feeling tolerably we
although 1 can see that the loss of h
trunk is troubliug her sorely, and if
contains what she claims it does, it is
serious loss; but now every effort is bei
used to find it that eau be. She is he
without funds, and does need some a
from some source other than that ni
being used.
Further, sho states that she had va
able papers in her trunk, and wished i
to ask yon to forward to ray addres
copy of those papers; for what purp?
or objeot I am unable to say. Tb
- however, is her request, just as e
stated it. She stated, also, that t
wanted funds, and felt confident tba
she wrote you, or had some ono do it
her, she should get the funds in so
shape. Her brother has not been to
her vet, although I wrote him on M
day last, the 6th, and there is a hackn
here from the town where ho resi
every day, who has seen and conver
with her. I am well acquainted with
brother, and she describes him accun
ly; although she states that she bas
seen him for twenty years or more. !
spoke of a lame hand he has, whicl
have often noticed. Why he does
como to seo ber I nm unable to say.
Tbero is something .singular in her ea.se,
which I nm not able to fathom. In thc
description of her brother, however, she
is sano. Now if you cnn give any infor?
mation concerning ber (which she snys
you can do) it will relieve tho minds of
a few hero, at least, who feel an interest
in her welfare. She states that her hus?
band was both a Mason and Odd Fellow,
and that her son is at West Point, which
all looks reasonable and sensible enough,
and perhaps is correct. Somo think her
au iusauo person, but she does not seem
to bc ono of tho one-idead ones, as some
are; and yet I think she in, at times,
flighty. Any information you can im- j
part will bo gladly received. She states
to me that yon can give me such infor?
mation concerning ber as will be entirely
satisfactory. If yon can do so it will be
a great relief, both to her and others.
lier object in wanting funds is, ns sho
states, to return homo to South Carolina.
She does not expect to visit her brother
nt all, if ho does not como to see her.
I am at a loss as to what moro 1 eau say,
but do not think it necessary to say any?
thing more on tho subject. All of the
abovo I have written at her request, and
bavo written what seems to me is about
what, in tho case, should bo said. And
still somo of her actions seem to me,
particularly this evening, to strongly in?
dicate insanity, but of what kind I am
unable to 6?y, as I am not versed in
either medical terms or iu diseases.
Please reply ut your earliest convenience.
Sho just now stepped iu and wished me
to request you to send ono of tho letters
that you received from her brother con?
cerning lier farm in Kansas. Verv tru?
ly, yours. H. K. RANDOLPH.
P. S. Please write me as above, Dela?
ware, Ohio.

tablished facts aro silent arguments which
neither pen nor tongue can shako, and it is
upon established facts that tho reputation of
HOSTETTER'S STOMACH RITTERP, as a
health-preserving elixir, and a wholceomoand
powerful remedy, is based. When witnesses
como forward in crowds, year after year, and
reiterato the samo statements in relation to
the beneficial effects of a medicine upou them?
selves, disbelief in its efiicacy is literally im?
possible. The credentials of this unequalled
tonic and alterative, extending over a period
of nearly twenty years, include individuals of
every class, and residents of every clime, and
refer to thc most prevalont among the com?
plaints which afllict and harass tho human
tamily. Either a multitude of people, i
strangers to each other, have annually been
Hcized with an insano and motiveless doBiro

for no less than a fifth of a century, have been
affording such relief to sufferers from indi?

while the eyes of the reader are upon these lines,
tens of thousands of persons of both soxes
aro relying upon the Ritters as a euro dofenco

engenders, and their confidence in not mis?
