AM Opossum Story--A Nation1? Grati?
tude to LaFayetto.
The New York Citizen tells a good
story of Gen. LaFayetto and the opos?
sum. Gol. Skinner, who is mentioned
in the subjoined article, is still in the
land of the Pharaohs:
When Gen. LaFayetto paid a visit to
this country, after it had attained its in?
dependence, be expressed n desire to
take home with him a specimen of that
essentially native animal tho opossum.
An intimate friend of his, who wus edit?
ing a paper at the time iu Baltimore, a
near relative of Col. Skinner, lately on
tho Turf, Field and Farm, hearing of
this desire on his part, inserted a notice ,
to that effect in tho columns of his jour?
nal.
Now, LaFayetto has always been great?
ly and deservedly loved and respected by
Americans. His name is a household
word with us. Every resident of our
oountry at that time would have bceu
pleased to testify appreciation of the
services he had rendered our colonies
when struggling for their independence.
There was a determination in the com?
munity to prove to him that republics
are not always ungrateful, and no sooner
had it become known that Gen. LaFay?
etto wanted a 'possum than it was unani?
mously resolved that u 'possum he should
have, at any cost of labor and oxpenso of
money. Hence, tho editor of the paper
we have referred to was not much sur?
prised when the ooach from Pawtuxent
arrived and he was informed that it bad
a box for him with an opossum.
He said to himself that this is only as
it should bo, and felt gratified that GOD.
Lafayette's wishes had been so soon
complied with. Our readers must re?
collect that in those days stago coaches
were all the go, and that railroads were
not in vogue. Henoo it took nowa and
'possums all the longer to travel. When,
however, the Philadelphia coach ap?
peared aud brought two more boxes of
possums, eaoh containing two lively
specimens, the editor was satisfied that
the oountry had done its duty; so that
next day, when tho regular stnge from
the Eastern shore came in and brought
him six additional 'possums, the editor
felt that he had enough; but when thc
Chesapeake boat landed at the wharf nt
Baltimore and presented him with 120
fresh and vigorous specimens, he began
to think that they wero getting too muny
for him.
Our people aro a great people. They
proved themselves so conspicuously on
this occasion. As for tho'possums, tho
ory was "still they come." From North,
from East, from South, from West; by
coaob, by stage, by carriage, by private
and public conveyance, by steamboat, by
rowboat, by sailboat; from Maryland,
from Virginia, from Pennsylvania, from
the AHeghany mountains, and possibly
even from tho Kooky mountains, they
poured on in one steady stream. In tho
course of two weeks the enthusiastic
friend and admirer had accumulated
2,200 'possums.
What to do with them he did not
know. He oould not store them sepa?
rately, and yet it seemed equally impos?
sible to store them together; and, finally,
he turned them all loose in Monumeut
Square, in Baltimore. Next day the
hearts of tho darkey residents in that
neighborhood were delighted. Colored
gentlemen love tho wily animal, ano
'possums wero abundant-almost too
abundant; they wandered through the
square; tboy climbed on tho Btoops o?
the houses, they hung on tho eves,
perched on the peaks, mouuted thc
chimneys, gathered on tho monument,
and clung to every placo where it was
possible for a'possum tooling, and there
they remained, slowly dispersing them?
selves through tho city, a lasting evi?
dence of tho high character of our peo?
ple in their devotion to those publio
men who are true to them and help them
in time of national distress. LaFayetto
never wanted for a 'possum afterwards,
and Baltimore editors havo no admira?
tion for them.

temperature ia regular, and not subject to
Buch variationa as in more Northern latitudes.

ter I saw several persons there whoso lungs
had been badly diseased, but who, under thc
healing influence of tho elimato and my medi?
cines, were gottiug well.
Ono hundred miles further down tho river
is a point which I would preter to Palatka, ns
tho temperature is mon; even and tho air dry
and bracing. Mollonvillo and Enterprise aro
localed thero. I should givo a decided pro
feronce to Mellon vi lie. lt is two miles from
river or lake, and it Bccms almost impossible
to take cold there. The tables in Florida
might be better, and patients complain at
times, hut that in a good sign, as it indicates
a return of appetite, and when this is the caso
they generally incienso in flesh, and then tho
lungs must heal.
Jacksonville, Hibernia, Oreen Cove, and
many other places in various parts ot Florida,
can he safely recommended to consumptives
in winter. My reasons for saying sn are that
patients aro lesa liablo to tain; cold there than
where there is a less oven temperature, and it
not necessary to say that where a consump?
tive person expos's him sel I to frequent colds,
he is certain to din shortly. Therefore my
advice is, go well down into tho State, nut ol
tho reach of prevailing East winds and fogs.
Jackson ville, or almost any other of tho lo?
calities I have named, will benefit those who
are troubled with a torpid liver, a disordered
Stomach, deranged bowels, eoro throat or
cough, but for those whoso lungs aro diseased
a more Southern point is earnestly recom?
mended.
For fifteen years prior to 1RG0, T was profes?
sionally in New York, boston, Baltimore and
Philadelphia every week, where 1 saw and ex?
amined on an averngo five hundred patients a
week. A practice BO extensivo, embracing
every possible phase of lung discaso, has ena?
bled md to understand tho disease tully, and
hence my caution in regard to taking cold. A
person nmy take vast quantities of ''Schonck's
1'ulmonie Syrup, Seaweed Tonic and Man
drake Pills," and yet dio if he does not avoid
taking cold.
lu Florida, nearly everybody is using
Sch Click's Mandrake Pills, fdr tho climate is
moro likely to produce bilious habits than
moro Northern latitudes. It is a well estab?
lished fact that natives of Florida rarely die
ot consumption, especially those of tho South?
ern part. On tho other hand, in New Eng?
land, one-third, at least, of tho population
dio of thin terrible disease. In the Middle
States it does not prevail HO largely, still
there are many thousands of cases there.
What a vast percentage of lire would he Bavcd
if consumptives were as easily alarmed in re?
gard to taking fresh cold as they aro about
scarlet fever, small-pox, Ac. Hut they uro
not. 1 hey tako what they term a little cold,
which they aro credulous enough to be.ieve
will wear tiff in a fow days. They pay no at?
tention to it, and hence it lays the foundation
for another mid another still, until the lungs
are diseased beyond ail hope for cure.
My advice to persons whoso lungs are
affected even slightly is, to lay in a stock of
Scheuck's Pu bunnie Syrup, Scheuck's Seaweed
Tonie and Scheuck's Mandrake Pills and go
to Florida. 1 recommend these particular
medicines becaiibo 1 am thoroughly acquaint?
ed with their act ion. I know that where they
are used in strict accordance with my direc?
tions, they will do the work that is required.
Thia accomplished, naturo will do the rest.
Tho physician who prescribes for cold, cough
or night-sweats, and then advises thc patient
lo walk or ride out every day, will be turo to
have a i cruse on his hands before long.
My plan is to givo my three medicines, in
accordance with tho printed direction-?, ex?
cept in some cases where a freer uso of tho
Mandrake Pills is necessary. My object is to
givo tone to tho stomach tn get up a good
appetite, lt ia alwajs a good sipi when a
patient begins to grow hungry. I have hopes
Of such. With a relish for food and the
gratification of that relish comes good blood,
and with it moro llesh, which is closely fol?
lowed by a healing of the lung?. Then the
cough loosens and abati s, the creeping chills
and clammy night-sweats no longer prostrate
and annoy, and tho patient gotB well, provid?
ed he avoids taking cold.
Now mero are many consumptives who have
not tho means to RO to Florida. The qui st ?on
may bo asked, is thero no hope tor BUch?
Certainly thero is. My advice to such is, and
ever has been, to stay in a warm rouni during
tho winter, with a" teniperaturo of al 'in
seventy degrees, which should bo kept
regularly at that point, by means of a ther?
mometer. Let suc.ti a patient take his ex?
ercise within the limits of tho room by walk?
ing up and down as much as bis strength wiil
permit, in ordor to keep up a healthy circula?
tion of the blood. I have cured thousands
hy this system, and can do so again. Con?
sumption is as easily cured as any other
disease, if taken in time, and the proper kind
of treatment is pursued. Tho fact stand?
undisputed on record that Sehonck's Pulmo?
n?a Syrup, Mandrake Fills, and Seaweed Tonic
have eureil very many of what seemed to be
hopeless cases of consumption. Go where
you will, you will bn almost certain to lind

from the very jaws of death by their use.

everybody should keep a supply of them on
hand. They act on tho Myer better than calo>
mel, and leave nono of ita hurtful effects be?
