that visitors can reaoh the apostolic'
palace io a carriago, by allowing the
horses to wade ap to their bellies. Tho
Pope has shown his usaal sympathy for
the poor in this emergency, sending out
large sums of money, which have greatly
alleviated the prevailing misery. The
Holy Father's gifts were especially bene?
ficial among the Jews in tho Ghetto,
where, owing to the proximity of the
Tiber, tho flood poured in without a
moment's notice, and consequently com?
mitted the greatest havoc, Tho Pope
received on his foto day several presents
of money, in sums varying from 200,000
to 20,000 francs, and he is thus able to
give freely. France, in the midst of her
deadly struggle for existence, sent him
170.000 frenos. The Holy Father gave
audience to the Corps Diplomatique, in?
cluding M. Lefevre, Charge d'Afiaires of
France. The prelates consider it a brui
omen that the number of receptions was
thirteen. lam informed that an officer
from the King of Italy presented him?
self daily at tho Vatican for nearly a
fortnight with a letter from the King to
the Pope, asking him to relieve King
Amadeus from the excommunication laid
on the house of Savoy, but was finally
told by Cardinal Antonelli that the letter
could not bo received. The delay, how?
ever, indicates hesitation on tho part of
the Popo, and consequently tho exist?
ence of a more conciliatory dispositiou.

After a careful examination I must confesB
that your Bittere is really what you reprcsont
it to bc, an old German rccipo of Dr- Mitch
erlich. of Berlin. Prussia. It will no doubtbs
excellent for dyspepsia, general debility and
nervous diseases, and is a good preventive of
chills and fover. I find it to bo a most de?
lightful and pleaeant Btomachic. I remain
yours truly, (Signed) AUG. P. WETTER.
