WT.-Every man who j hus been born ia tho South, longs to see ! it rico from ito rained condition. This, every true patriot believes, sber will -?on How ia this to be accomplished? Not by folding our hands in idleness, nor by murmuring and repining on account of hard times and high taxes. The times are not near as hard as they have been, and if the taxes aro high, whining about it docs not pay them. We deplore the miserable state of .things which now exists, as much as any one. A vast amount of money is annually expended for nuisa. -tes. The condition of things IR abnorm?.:. As iL was in the days of the patriarch Job, sc it is now. * The oxen are plowing and the asses are feed? ing beside them. Jeroboam, King of Israel, made priests of tho lowest of the people who were not of the sons of Levi. Now we have priests and prophets, and all sorts of officers, from the petty con? stable to the dignified Governors of States-from ' the riff raff of society. Every right-minded man views such a state of things with disgust. It sickens bim and produces a kind of mental loathing. Our redemption, however, does not lie in brooding over our mis? fortunes. It is placed, with the blessing of Heaven, in ourselves. Wo must all go to work. Everybody must become a producer as well ss a consumer. Wo have no need for drones, or idlers, or gentlemen of leisure. Many of our people, becauso they cannot do as they onco did, seem to have formed the fixed resolution not to try to out at all. They have become desperate. Others aro smitten with a spirit of apathy, and fold their arms in indifference. This is not wise. Such persons might learn ?rn important lesson from a flock of geese. Those fowls, in the midst of a hail-storm, stand with their heads ereot, exposing as little of their bodies to the frozen rnin as possi? ble. The duty and interest, too, of every good citizen at present, is to stand ereot. Instead of crouching beneath the load of oppression, why not summon all our strength, nud like bravo men, redeem our country from its prostra? tion? lb is an old saying, and experi? ence proves its truthfulness, that "the gods help them that help themselves. If we will do our duty faithfully, God will bless us with prosperity. But if we supinely succumb to every little difficul? ty, we need not expect to be redeemed from our evils, either real or imaginary, soon. A deposit of gold and quartz recently supposed to have been discovered in Victoria, Australia, created much excitement. A company was formed, and the shares were rapidly taken and paid for.
