THE DAILY
"Let our Just Censure
Attend the True Event.'
RY J. A.. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. G.. WEDNESDAY MORNING. JANUARY 18. 1871. VOL. VI-NO. 258.
,A,New York letter: saya: "Tho na na?
bar' of men out of employment ia im?
mense, and hundreds are added to it
weekly. At the door of Cooper Insti?
tute reading-room, the other day, several
meo, evidently of the working class,
otooii talking. Said one: 'I have not
earned a dollar in three months.' An?
other Baid: 'It is just as bad with me;
can't get work anywhere.' A third
could not stay at home it?was so cold, so
he came to the reading-room every day
to keep warm. This was the drift of the
conversation. Within the reading-room
there were probably 300 men, from twen?
ty-five to sixty, all out of work, and try?
ing to kill time. Aud they looked like
men willing enough to work, if they
could find work to do. Only thoBO who
go among the poor have any real know?
ledge of the distress among the working
classes. It may not be greater than in
previous winters, but certainly it is not
less.. Ti.)o aid societies are run down
with applicants for assistance. All the
relief provided is bitterly needed."
QUITE A REVOLUTION.-The people of
the North are beginning to find out that
States rights are not dead, but, ou tho
contrary, the livest of all live issues in
the great battle for the preservation of
constitutional liberty. Gov. Hoffman,
of New York, protests vigorously against
the interference of the Federal Govern?
ment in the affairs of the Empire State.
Gov. Geary, Radical Governor of Penn?
sylvania, is quite abreast of Hoffman in
this respect. And now wo have, by tele?
graph, a report of Hon. Charles Francis
Adama' letter to the Jackson Association
of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, in which
that distinguished statesman advocates a
"return to first principien" in our Go?
vernment, which must mean, if it means
anything at all, a return to States rights
and the annihilation of centralism as ex?
pounded by Congress and President
Grant. Verily the world moves.
