VI-No! 257 BESIEOJID CITIES OF FBANCE.-After haying been 100 days before Paris, regu? larly besieging it, tho German army bas begun to bombard that apparently doomed oily. On Tuesday, tho dring upon Fort Mont Avron commenced. No doubt 100 days of suspenso must bave appeared wearisome and painful to the besieging as 'well as the besieged parties, but that is not a very long time for a siege. That of Sebastapol, which lasted eleven mouths-from October, 1854, to Septomber, 1855-was far more remarkable. That of Paris may bo ne. destructive and as tedious ero it closes.* The Prussians havo been successful against tho fortified cities of Franco. The Times, becoming sentimental, phi? losophises as follows: "Rouen and Orleans iiavo fallen! The grand old Norman city-tho home of the soundest and most enterprising population of France-one of the richest in glorious old traditions, in modi;?'val monuments one of the most conspicuous in modern industrial achievements-tho city of William tko Conqueror, of St. Ouen and M. Pouyor-Qnertier-Rouen has fallen! It takes away a man's breath to run over tbe roll of French towns that have become tho prey of the invader since the fatal speech of tho Duo de G ram mont in tho legislative body-Nancy, the 'light of love' of Lorraine; Metz, the maiden for? tress; Strasburg, the Amazon of Alsace; Rheims, the sanctuary of Champagne; Dijon, the Court of Burgundy; Laou and Boisson, the abodes of Frankish royalty; Orleans, the field of the Maid's exploits, and now Rouen, the scene of her martyrdom-when and where will bo the end?" To this list will probably soon be added Havre, Cberbourg, Bou? logne, Calais, Lyons, Tours and Paris. It appears, too, that Dieppe is now occupied by Gormans. There bas been a fatal and terrible response to tbe July cry of "On to Berlin!" Brian Madden uudertook, lastMondny night, to cross a railroad bridgo at Rich? mond, Indiana. Tho foot-bridge being covered' with ice, bo undertook to cross on the ties, and when almost half-way over he discovered a train coming. In? stead of stepping on tho foot-bridge, he took a stand on one of tho girders to await the train. As the cara passed ho unconsciously threw out one of his hands, which, falling on tho track, was cut off by tlio wheels. Ho staggered and fell through tho opening near him, and descended seventy feet, striking the ice on the river, which crushed him into a shapeless mass.
