"Too Muon PROVIDENCE."-Tho Me?
tropolitan Record thinks there is entirely
too much freedom used in attributing
this, that and the other thing to Provi?
dence. Thus Kaiser Wilhelm has been
making Providence responsible for every
defeat of the French army, whereas
everybody knows that the mishaps of
the French are tho direct consequences
of certain perfectly natural causes. The
Record adds: "The propriety of recog?
nizing the permission of Heaven to what
happens npon earth is not, of course, to
be questioned. But it is not the will of
Providence that Smith .should commit a
murder, or that Brown should be hanged.
Smith is directly responsible vfor his
crime, and Brown dies to satisfy the
law. Providence permits tho crime of
one and the punishment of the other,
bat has no direct hand in cither. Any
doctrine but this contradicts the Divine
ordinance that man shall be accountable
for his act H."
An Atlanta paper of last week says:
"A lady in this city tied her husbaud's
hands and feet the other day, just for fun,
and then went through his pockets for a
certain billet-doux, and found it. His
physician tells him that his face won't be
badly scarred, thongh he may remain
permanently bald."
