Oar. Western exahangeei generally
speak of trade aa unusually stagnant,
juot now, bnt are hopeful of brisker
times soon to come. At Oinoinnati,
Chicago, Louisville, and other centres of
business, money is scarce and dear. It
is admitted, however, that if nobody is
making money, bub few ure losing il.
Sp?culative ventnreB are in disfavor, aud
the old motto "slow, but sure," is com?
ing to be better thought of than it used
to be.
Dr. Livingstone, the famous African
traveler, whose fate has long been ob?
scured, is said by a cable telegram to
have arrived at Mnzambiquo, aud was
waiting a vessel bound to England. It
ts to be hoped the report is true, ns thu
whole civilized world is interested in tho
great explorer, who was so long ago re?
ported killed by savages.
Owing to tho recent intense cold, tho
wires of tho Wostern Union Telegraph
Line, between Bangor nud Lewiston,
Maine, wore broken in nearly fifty
pieces. Tho wires woro put up during
the hot weather last summer, aud, con?
tracting with tho cold, snapped like
threads.
John Salli vim, of Cumian, N. H.,
came homo a few nights nineo in a bad
temper and flogged ono of his sous.
Shortly aftor, his two sons, about eleven
and fourteen years of ago, seized their
father, bound and gagged him, and, tak?
ing bim to tho barn, bunged bi tu. Ho
was discovered by his wife in limo to
save his life.
The dramatic company of the Holiday
Street Theatre, in Baltimore, on Satur?
day night, subscribed $100 to purchase
a Doro's illustrated Biblo, for the Bev.
Dr. Houghton, of tho "little church
around the corner" in Now York.
Two Wisconsin Iudians quarreled re?
cently, and one killed the other. Tho
tribe condemned the murderer to bo
skinned alive, which was done, tho vic?
tim being staked to tho ground to ni uko
him hold still.
The Federal "Boll of Honor" now
makes twenty-five volumes, and contains
tho record of over 333,000 graves of de?
ceased Union soldiers. Two volumes
moro will complete tho work.
