Germany on the 10th, redoubled their
efforts against the army of Chansey, who,
pressed on all sides, retired to his origi?
nal position. The action was hotly dis?
puted, one of tho French brigades re?
sisting the incessant attacks of the enemy
for six hours. Losses considerable ou
both sides. Gen. Bourbaki, command?
ing the army of the East, telegraphs
that his troops passed Tuesday night in
driving the enemy from houses in Ville
Rexel. Advices from Lille represents the
army of the North as advanced beyond
Bordeaux.

Versailles. The German oolamns ope?
rating agaiuBt Gen. Chansey havo driven
him within one mile of Lomans, after a
severe engagement, in which one cannon,
three mitrailleuse and 2,000 prisoners \
wore captured. The loss of Gen. Wer
der's army at the storming of Ville Re
sexel was only 200 killed and wounded.
A large German army is being formed in
the Eastern department of Frunce, which
will be under tho special command of a
distinguished officer, and include the
corps of General Von Werder, Zaustrow
and others.

Tho bombardment of Paris continues

There is great anxiety at Liverpool for
the Bafety of tho steamer Brooklyn.

in consequence of a snow storm and
heavy fog. Prouue has capitulated,
with 3,000 prisoners. Werder defeated
Bourbaki on the 9th, South of Verstll,
and took 800 prisoners.

There is authority for saying that all
rumors, since the resignation of Secreta
ry Cox, of Cabinet changes, are without
a particle of foundation. Every member
seems to be thoroughly satisfied with
his position, and the President is satis
fled with them all. The President does
not intend, as some of the newspapers
have stated, to send a message to Con
gress on the subjoct of reconstruction
He will, however, in a few days, trans
mit a largo number of reports from
military officers, received nt the War
Department, in which complaints are
made and incidents given of outrages
and disturbances in tho South. They
will bo submitted in order that action
may be taken, with a view to afford tho
required relief, and a recommendation
to this effect may bo made by tho Presi?
dent in a brief message.

The House joint resolution appropri?

thc Louisville and Portland Canal and
?341,000 for tho completion of the Des
Moines Rapids, was up. Chandler moved
to refer it to the Committee on Com?
merce. Ilarlnn said it was important
that tho appropriation for Des Moines
Rapids bo made at once. If the em?
bankment is not rip rapped at once, tho
spring freshets will wash it away. Sher?
man appealed to Chandler to let the bill
pass. It was important that tho appro?
priation for tho Portland and Louisville
Canal should bo mado. Tho bill was
advocated by Morton, Dowell, Kellogg
and others. Chandler said tho river and
harbor bill, with estimates for all these
improvements, would be reported within
four weeks, and this should take its
chances with the rest. After an extend?
ed discussion, motion to refer was re?
jected, and the bill passed and goes to
the President. A commission to inves?
tigate claims for Indian depredations in
Kansas and Nobraska was authorized.
A bill relieving members of Congress
from the importunity of office-holders
was discussed to adjournment.
Tho Secretary of tho Troosury decides
that all rum, gin and whiskey imported
into the United States sinco January 1,
1871, is 8ubjectto a duty of $2.50 per
proof gallon, under tho laws of Con?
gress. This is a disappointment to im?
porters, who expected the decision would
place the duty on these liquors the same
as that on imported brandy-$2 per
proof gallon.
Silas A. Strickland, of Nebraska, was
nominated as Governor of Utah Terri
torry. Bishop Simpson declines . the
Dominican commissionership. Alex. H.
Connor waa confirmed as Governor of
Idaho.
