ABHEBT OF QEOBOB W. SWETSON.-On
Thursday night of this week, says the
Knleigh Sentinel, George., W. Swenson
was arrested in this city, OD B bench
warrant i SH ned by Chief Justice Pear?
son, upon an ? Hi dov it rnade by Gov. T.
R. Caldwell. The warrant was er.ecnted
by Mr. Scales, ono of tho city police.
The writ has several counts, charging
Swepson with embezzlement of public
funds, conspiracy to dofruud the State
and the Western North Carolina Rail?
road, &c, &c. It was returned before
Chief Juetio Pearson on Wednesduy
morning, who postponed the examina?
tion of tho case nntil yesterday morning,
when it was again taken up, and after
argument of some length on both Hides,
the Chief Justice decided to hold the
prisoner to appear nt the Spring Term
of Bunooinbo Superior Court, which
opens next week ot Asheville, in the
Bum of 8200,000, aud in tho meantime
to be in the custody of tho Mursbul of
tho Court until the bail bo given.

Tho Dubuque Tintes says: "The Regis?

Fort Dodge, frieda sharp game ou a mau
named John Rogers, who had picked
out a piece of Government land on
which he desired to settle. Tho Regis?
ter told him (Rogers) that n man named
Flanagan had a prior claim, but that ho
would try and arrunge the matter. He
afterwards told Rogers that Flanagan
WUB willing to sell out his title for 8200
and some $11 costs. It turns out that
Flanagan was a myth, and that tho Re?
gister put the $211 in his owu pocket.
Rogers, on making this discovery, sued
the Register io th? Circuit Court, and
hos just recovered his $211, with inte?
rest and costs."
Were it not amusing it would bn
pitiful to read of tho French accounts
of German excesses. The chroniclers
of France never tire of recording tho in?
dignities to which tho citizens of captur?
ed towns and cities uro subjected by
the conquering Teutons, forgetting
entirely how their glorious and more
fortunute martial uucestors demeaned
themselves when they overran Germany
miller tho eagles of tho First Napoleon.
Thanks to the progress of civilization,
the rules and customs of war uro
moro humano and honorable than they
were sixty years ago. Invaded France
is really suffering little in comparison
with Germany iu tho days when the
legions of the First Empire subdued the
Teutons.

I ?sT* Dr. Seilende Adv ist ? Conaumutlvvs
to ?<> to Florida tn Winter_Having for
tho laut tbirly-?vo years devoted my whole
time and attention to the study of lune dis?
eases and consumption, I fool that 1 under?
stand fully the course tust ought to bo pur?
sued to restore a tolerably bad caso of diseased
lungs to healthy soundness. The first and
most important step is for thu patient io
avoid taking cold, and thu best of all placos
on thia continent for thia purpose in winier,
is Florida, well down in the State, whore tho
temperature is regular, and not subject to
auch variation:) as in mort Northern latitudes.
Pula! ka is a point I can recommend. A good
hotel ?H Kept there by Peterman. Last win?
ter I saw several persona there whose lungs
had bern badly diseased, but who, under thc
he lling influence of tho climate and my medi?
cines, were getting well.
tine hundred miles fut tin r down tho river
is a point which I would prefer to Palatkn, as
tho temperature ia moro even and the air dry
und bracing. Mt llonvillo and Enterprise arc
local t tl lhere. I should give a decided pro
fi ronco to Mellonville. lt is two miles from
river or luke, aud it seems almost impossible
to bike cold tbcro. Tho tables in Florida
might be better, and patients complain at
times, hu? that is a Rood sign, aa it indicates
a return of appotite, and when this is tho casu
they generally increase in flesh, and then the
lunga must heal.
Jacksonville, Hibernia, Green Cove, ant1,
many other places in various parts of Florida,
can bo safely recommended to consumptives
in winter. My reasons for saying so aro that
patients aro lesB liablo to take cold there than
where there is a less oven temperature, and it
?H not necessary to say that where a consump?
tive person expos? s h i mr-elf to frequent colds,
he is certain to dio shortly. Therefore, my
atlvico is, go well down into tho State, rut ot
tho rcaci) of prevailing East winds and fogs.
Jacksonville, or almost any other of the lo?
calities 1 have named, will benefit those who
aro troubled with a torpid liver, a disordered
stomach, deranged bowels sore throat or
cough, but for those whoso lungs aro diseased
a moro Southern point is earnestly recom?
mended.
For fifteen years prior to 18G0, T was profes?
sionally iu Now York, boston, baltimore and
Philadelphia eve.y week, where I saw rind ex?
amined on an average five hundred patients a
week. A practice so extensive, embracing
every possible phase of lunn diseapo, bas ena
bled me to understand the disenso fully, and
heuco my caution in regard to taking cold. A
person may take vasl quantities of "Sehenck'o
I'ulmoine Syrup, Seaweed Tonie and Man
druitt: Fills," and yet die if he docs not avoid
taking cobb
In Florida, neatly everybody is using

moro Norlin rn latitudes. It is a weil estab?
lished fuel that native?of Florida rarely die
