DEMOCRATIC TICKET.-Yesterday I heard
an old negro explaining to a few of II?B
color his reasons for having voted the
Democratic ticket. Said he, os ho mude
fierce gestures with hin weather-beaten
hand, "Yes, yon'ro right; I did vote the
Democratic ticket. Its tho first time
I ever did, aud unices they run this here
Gov'ment better than thc radicals have,
it will bo the last time. I propose to try
'em. "Why is ti mea hard, and v?hy ain't
thar no money in the country? Tho
radicals are playing smash with every?
thing. I commenced for to voto tho
radical ticket over two years ogo, nnd
ever sinco that time money has been
getting scarcer and scarcer, and now I
don't Bee a $10 bill once a month. I
hain't got cents now* where I used to
have dollars when I commenced for to
rote tho radical ticket. We must have a
change in this hero business, or we'll all
go up, white and black alike. Talk
about tho radicals being friends to tho
colored men! Any mau with hal? of one
eye oan seo that they ain't friends to
anybody but themselves. They're arter
tho office which draws them big pay and
takes all tho money ont of tho couutiy,
and makes cotton go down so that a
darkey can't oarn enongh in a year to
buy a hoe-cake for Christmas. That's
v?hat they do. Who lent mo a mulo last
summer to finish my crop, when mino
had broken his leg trying to get over the
fence? Was it a radical? No; they'd
have seed my crop go to weeds afore
they'd have did it. Fact is, mighty few
of them have got any mules to lend. It
waB a Democrat who came to me and
says, 'Joe, you've had bad luck; you
will lose all your work nnless you can
get a nag to finish your crop. Go to my
stable and get that old mule that's blind
in one eye, and pay mo what's right for
hor when tho crop is made.' I paid him
np like a man. When I was sick lust
summer, and didn't have a bite in the
house to eat, who brought me the hunk
of bacon? It waa this 'ere same Demo?
crat, and now when he wants my vote ho
can get it. A man who Bticks up to me,
I'll stick up to him all tho time," and, so
saying, tho ancient negro walked off,
leaving his little circle of listeners to
comment upon his speech and digest his
wisdom. One said thuthohad been bought
np; that a man who would sell ont for a
hunk of bacon wasn't any account.
Another thought h's head was lovel, and
another said something in a vnguo way
about fools. It seemed to be his opi?
nion that they were not all dead yet.

The New York papers contain details
of a singular and horrible suicido iu the
Northern Hotel, on Tuesday night. 'Ibo
victim, a Scotchman named Nichols, had
been stopping there some six months,
invariably paying his lodging bill each
day iu advance. He shot himself iu the
head, with an old-fashioned holster
pistol, crammed full of powder and
bullets, nnd left notes indicating that de?
spair, from loug-coutinued illness,
prompted the deed.
The Advent Herald sara that Rev. Mr.
Adams, of Holyoke, Massachusetts, rc
coutly immersed forty-four persons in
twenty-two minutes, and that Elder
Pike, of Newburyport, once immersed
ninety-seven persons in less than sixty
five minutes. It thinks the Apostles
could have easily immersed the 3,0110
converts on the day of Pentecost.
Papers throughout the Eastern Stales
aro complaining of the drouth, and the
Norwich Advertiser explains that thc
difference between last winter aud this,
is, that there was plenty of water then,
but no cold weather to freeze it, and now
there is plenty of cold weather, but no
water for it to freeze.
The vintage on the Rhine for 1870 is a
failure. German superstition avers that
every year written with a cypher at the
end is a fatal one for the vintage. The
wine of I860 was anathematized under
the epithet of "Garibaldi," and that of
1870 will ponbtles3 be cursed in the name
of ?'Napoleon."

Grand Drawing of the North Carolina Bene?

all, and little rolls of paper separating tttete
were placed in a wheel on ono side, while the
tickets were in another wheel opposite to the
former. Between the two was a table, at
which sat the Judges and Mr. John London,
Commissioner. The wheels were madu with
glass aides, so that everything within them
could bo seen, and w? re securely lockod, until
tho drawing began. This was done hy means
of two little boys, who were securely blind?
folded, une drawing a number from ono of the
wheels and the other the prize to correspond
with it. There is no question but that thc
drawing waa done in a perfectly fair and just
