IMPURS LIQUORS.-A liquor seller has
been adjudged guilty in Connecticut of j
tb? violation of a new statute, which
prohibits the sale in that State of adul?
terated liquors. It appeared from the
testimony of Professor Silliman that the
article sold as port wine contained forty
five grains to the gallon of oxide of lead,
and -the whiskey fifty grains of lead to
the gallon. The fact stood forth in miti?
gation, that defendant did not know tho
ohuraoter o? the liquors he sold; but the
court decided that his offence was of such
gravo description, that it would have to
be punished with sufficient severity to
call the attention of all who aro selling
liqaers contrary to law, to the perils
they inour if the liquors they sell are
impure and poisonous. Stanton was ac?
cordingly fined in $300 and cc ats. Ic
Scotland, thc aale of impure liquors is a
felony, aud the offender is punished with
severe penalties.
The meanest man in Per Hand, Mc.,
is mid to bo a "gentleman" of fortune,
who enters stores, and after reading the
daijy paper, coolly pockets it for the
perusal of a friend, who pays him $4 a
year, under the impression that he him?

could be seen, and wero aecuroly locked, until
tho drawing began. This waa done by moana
