EDITOB: The Executive Commit too of the Sooth Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Soooty, ot their recent meeting, -held ia this oity, awarded a premium of #20 to Dr.. JA P> Porcher, of Charleston, "for the best essay on the utilization of Sooth Carolina plants, hitherto considered valueless." Alao, a premium of $25 to Mr. J. M. Crawford, of Columbia, for the greatest jieid cotton on five acres of restored up? land, the aggregate amount being 13,230 ponuds. Also, n premium of $10 to Mr. J. M. Crawford, of Colombia, for the greatest yield of one aero of restored upland, the yield being 4,140 pounds. At the rennest of Mr. J. R. Dukes. Mr. J. K. KoLaon and Messrs. Geo. "W. Williams & Co., of Charleston, the Ex? ecutive Committee received and con? sidered tho reports of parties throughout the State, who were competing for pre? miums offered by the above named gen? tlemen, and as tho result of their con? siderations have awarded the first premium offered by Mr. J. R. Dukes to wit: "for tho largest produot of cotton on ten acres of laud, manured with tho Wando Fertilizer, $300-to Mr. Thoe. W. Babb, of Fairfield, his report being 19,050 pounds of seed cotton from ten acres. For the othor premiums offered by Mr. Dukes, there were no worthy competitors. The first prize offered by Mr. J. N. Robson-to wit: "a silver pitcher, valne $75, for tho greatest growth of cotton from one acre of land, manured with Solublo Pacific Guano, or Compound Acid Phosphate"-they havo awarded to Mr. J. G. Hinson, of Charleston, who reports selling a bag of Sea Island cotton, weighing 240 pounds, or f$198.39 net, from one acre, mauured with Soluble Pacific. Second prize-a silver goblet worth $50 to Mr. E. T. Staokhouao, of Marion, who reports making 6,162 pounds of lint cotton on eleven acres, manured with 1,200 ponnds per nore of a compost made of three bags of compound acid phosphate and 600 ponnds of cotton seed. Third prize-a silver cup, worth $25, to Mr. W. H. Evans, of Sooiety Hill, who reports 1,781 ponnds of seed cotton from ono acre, manured with 700 bushels of rotted straw, thirty bushels cotton seed and one bag of Soluble Pacific. Also, 1,641 pounds of seed cotton from one aero, manured with two bags of So? luble Pacific. Also, 1,095 pounds Beed cotton from each of two acres, manured with one bag eaoh of Soluble Pacific. There were no competitors for Mr. Robson's premiums for the prodnotion of corn. The first prize offered by Messrs. Geo. W. Williams & Co., to wit: "A Gullet gin, of forty saws, or a horse or mule of same value, and one of Dodge's cele? brated steel plows, for the greatest in? creased production in pounds of seed cotton from five acres of land," they have awarded to Mr. Jas. F. Bolton, of Marlboro, who reports the crop of corn from theso five acres of land at one peck per ucro in 1868; tho crop of cotton at fifty-six pounds seed cotton in 1869, and 806;Ja pounds of seed cotton per acre in 1870, when tho fivo acres were manured with 200 pounds of the Carolina Fertil? izer per acre. There wore no other competitors foi Messrs. Williams ?fe Co.'s other pre? miums. Tho reports of theso several planters will bo published in full at an early date in a pamphlet, containing tho transac? tions of the Soath Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Society, at its meetings during the late Fait. Greenoastle, Franklin County, Ky., has, it is said, recently been perplexed by the pbjsieal formation of a colored man. He has a double organization, and can chango his heart in four differ? ent positions, while his bowels revolve around like a ball with great rapidity backward and forward, aud when their motion ceases, an extra set of ribs elido down and cover the entire abdomen. Ho says he does not suffer in the least from this curions freak of nature. George Holland, the veteran comedian, who died in New York, on Tuesday last, had reached the ripe old age of seventy sine years and fourteen days. Allen com? manding, in passing down the Green? ville nod Columbia Railroad, en route for Georgia, on Thursday, tho 15th instant, killed and wounded a numbor of cattle, hogs and othor stock, by tiring from tho cars. This is a gross outrage on tho part of these men. Ho ro ceived every attention from Mayor Alex? ander and his police. Dr. Lynch was unremitting in his endeavors to aid tho stricken man. As Mr. Murray waa in? sensible the greater portiou of the time, and likewise speechless, his friends in Columbia were unaware of his situation. Tho Governor has appointed M. R. Delauy aud A. B. Jarvis Notaries Pub? lic for Charleston. By reference to the report of tho Exe? cutive Committee, it will be seen that our follow-citizeu, Mr. J. M. Crawford, has received two premiums for the largest yields of cotton on restored uplands. Mr. C. has proven himself a thorough planter, and has been awarded premiums on several occasion?. Christmas gifts had their origin in the Roman Faganalia, which was instituted by Sorvius Tullius, B. C. 55?. On tbeso festivals, celebrated at the beginning of the year, an altar was erected in every village, and to the box placed upon it overy mau, woman and child was ex? pected to contribute a coin. Aubrey speaks of a pot in which Roman coins were found, and supposed to be ono of these Pugaualiun vessels. The Christ? mas box naturally arose from this Pagau j New Year's box.
