consumed, and thus added to tho boat.
The invention has been satisfactorily
tested in New England by practical men.
It is to be hoped that it will be generally
adopted by the railroads of the country.

I sued to restore a tolerable bad case of diseased
lnogs to healthy soundness. Tho first and
most important step is for tho patient to
avoid taking cold, and tbo best of all places
on this continent for this purpose in winter,
is Florida, well down in the State, whero the'
temperature ia regular, and not subject to
such variations BB in more Northern latitudes.
Palatka in a point I can recommend. A good
hotel is kept there by Peter pi an. Last whi?
ter I Haw several persons there whose lungs
bad boen badly diseased, but who, Under the
bealing influence of tho climate and tay medi?
cines, wore getting well.
One hundred miles further down thc river
ia a point which I would prefer to Palatka, as
tho temperature is.moro even and tho air dry
and bracing. Mellon ville and Enterprise are
localed there. I should give a dvcided pre?
ference to Mellon ville. It Is two mires from
river or lake, and it uecras almost impossible -
to tako cold lhere. The tables in Florida
might ho better, and patients complain at
times, but that is a good sign, as it indicates
a return of appetite, and when this is tho case
they generally increase in flesh, and then the
lungs must heal. . . ,
Jacksonville, Hibernia, Green Covo, and.
many other places in varions parts of Florida,
can bo safely recommended to consumptives
in winter. My reasons for saying so are that
patients are less liable to ta ko cold there than
whore there ia a less even temperature, and it
is not necessary to say that whero a consump?
tive person exponen himself to frequent colds,
be is certain to die ebortly. Therefore, my
advice is, go well down into tho State, out ol
tho reach of prevailing East winda and fogs.
Jacksonville, or almost any other of the lo?
calities I have named, will benefit thoeo who
aro troubled with a torpid liver, a disordered
stomach, deranged bowels, sore throat or
cough, but for those whose lungs nro diseased
a more Southern point is earnestly recom?
mended.
For fifteen years prior to 1869,1 waB profes?
sionally iu New York, Boston, Baltimore and
Philadelphia every week, whero I saw and ex?
amined on an average five hundred patients a
week. A practice so extensive, embracing
every possible phase of lung disease, bas ena?
bled me to understand tho disease fully, and
hence roy caution in regard to taking cold. A
person may take vapt quantities of "Schench's
Pulmonic Syrup, Seaweed Tonio and Man?
drake Pills," and yot die if he docs not avoid
taking cold.
In Florida, nearly everybody is using
Schonck's Mandrake Pills, for the climate 1B.
moro likely to produce bilious habits than
moro Northern latitudes. It is a well estab?
lished fact that natives of Florida rarely dio
of consumption, especially those of the South?
ern part. On tho other hand, in New Eng?
land, one-third, at least, of the population
die nf this terrible disease. In tue Middle
States it does not prevail so largely, still
Hiern aro many thousands of cases there.
What a vast per cent ago of life would be saved
if consumptives wero as easily alarmed in re?
gard to taking fresh cold as they'are about
scarlet fever, small-pox, Ac. But they are
not. They take what they term a.little cold,
which they are credulous enough1 to bollovo
will wear off in a few days. They pay no at?
tention to it, and hence it lava the foundation
for another and another still, until the lungs
aro diseased beyond all hope xor cure.
My advice to persons whose lungs are
affected even slightly is, to lay in a stock of
Schonck's Pulmonic Syrup, Sob cook's Seaweed
Tonic and Schcnck's Mandrake Pills and go
to Florida. I recommend these particular
medicines beoause 1 am thoroughly acquaint?
ed with their action. I know that where they,
are used in strict accordance with my direc?
tions, they will do tho work that is required.
Thia accomplish?d, nature will do thc rest.
The physician who prescribes for cold, cough
or night-sweats, and then advises the patient
to walk or ride ont every day, will be sure to
have a corpse on bis hands before long.
My plan is to givo my three medicines, in
accordance with the printed dfrectiohs, rx
oopt in some cases where a freer use of the
Mandrake Pills is Dccesi-ary. My object ia to
give tone to tho stomach- to get up a good
appetite. It is always a good sign wbeu a
patient begins to grttw hungry. I have hopes
of such. With a/relish for food and tho
gratification of tUat relish comes good blood,
and with it morrCflesh, which is closely fol?
lowed by a beaning of tho lungs. Then the
cough loosens ajnd abates, the creeping chills
and clammy nig?ht-sweats no longer prostrate
and annoy, and the patient got? well, provid?
ed he avoids tak/ing cold.
