We learn by a pasaonger that, on ttuudav
or Monday evening last, Dr. Brantley,
brothel- ol :tbe 'Winona victims; "was
sitting by tho stove in tho station li on KU
at Shuqualak, waiting for tho np-train.
While warming himself, a negro man,
employed about the depot, walked into
tho roora attd remarked to tho doomed
man that there was a stranger prowling
about the platform with a donble-barrel
gan on his shoulder, whose looks he did
not like. The doctor fu?t enough inte?
rest in the matter to remnrk probably
that ho had better abut tho door and
lower the curtain; . In a few moments,
the murderer, whoever ho was, ap?
proached the window, and having, it is
supposed, a partial view of his victim nt
the aide of the onrtain, fired through the
glass and killed the object .of his hate
and malice.
Within a few months, this is the third
brother' murdered in this way. First,
the Mayor of Winona, who wns shot
while Bitting in a concert room amid a
crowd of men. and women. Then, the
General,.who was waylaid near Winona
and murdered. And lust, tho doctor
whose bloodshed closes tho awful serial

A gentleman residing nt Bangor, Me.,
has had a very singular experienco in
chooolate-makicg. Tho other morning

placed a pot of chocolate upon it, and
went into the cellar to attend to tho fur?

ments he returned to find that the cho?
colate had boiled over; that the
"grounds" hud dried and ignited; that

been almost entirely consumed.
A MAN'S HEAD SPLIT OPEN.-A man
by the name of Wesley Coppedgo was
killed near the barracks, by a woman
named Bernetta Helton. It seems, from
her statement, that Coppedge had for
some time past been making undue ad?
vances toward ber, and last night, under
the influenco of liquor, ho weut to whore
she was stopping, and rcuowed his famil?
iarities, when she seized nu ase and split
his bead open, killing him instantly.

CLOSE OF HUDSON RIVER NAVIGATION.
The navigation of the Hudson Uiver is
practically closed. The extremo cold
weather of the past few days in tho
Northern Biver Counties of New York
has filled the river with floating ice, and
navigation has become a matter of consij
derable danger and difficulty. The
Albany steamboats ceased running on
Saturday.
The Galveston Bulletin is "red hot"

The State of Pennsylvania ordered n
