AKHTJUAN MURDER OP A NEORO.-A
negro named Thomas Black, who lived
near Harmony, in this County, three or
four miles from the State line, was
murdered at his house on Saturday
morning laBt. - The testimony adduced
before tho Coroner's investigation elicit?
ed tho foe ta that at about 1 o'clock on
Saturday : . morning, the inmates of
Black's boase were aro need by the Arin g
of fjuno. in bis yard. Surmising trouble,
Black attempted to conceal himself in
the loft of his noose, but was discover?
ed, when ho attempted to make his
escape by flight, but was fired upon and
fell in his yard, pierced by a nnmber of
bal!.?, af tor which his throat was oat.
The party, estimated at sixty in number,
was recognized to consist of white men,
with'the exception of three, who were
disguised, and whose complexion conld
noS bo distinguiohed. They rode off in
tho direction of North Carolina. The
jury .rendered a verdict that "tho de?
ceased. Thomas Black, came to his death
by gun-shot wounds and having his
thront out by persons unknown, though
it iain evidonco that Samuel Randall,
of North Carolina, and John Hicks and
Mao'Byers, of York County, S. C., were

annual message of Gov. Scott is to be
found in our paper this week. In many
respects he promises and advises better
things for the future. And we are glad
to nay that he is already making good
one of his promises-that of disbanding
the constabulary, and allowing the police
dattes of the State to revert to the local
authorities, . .
All members of the constabulary, save
one who-remained as oommander of the
j Dil guard, Were withdrawn from this
placo some weeks ago. And within the
last three days the jail guard itself has
been disbanded. Its commander and
members are already scattered and gone,
and Edgofleld, for the first time in two
or three y eave, is how free of State con?
stables, United States soldiers or negro
soldiers. - This jail guard, composed of
twenty-odd negroes, was a fruitful and
never-ending oaase of trouble, dissen?
sion, violence and expense. To inveigh
against it now, however, would boot bat
little. We earnestly hope such another
unspeakably horrible carse will never

Jacksonville, Hibernia, Oreen Oove, and
many other places in various parts of Florida,
can bo safely recommended to consumptives
in wintor. My reasons for saying so are that
patients aro loss liable to take cold there th Sn
whero there is a le BU even temperature, and lt
is not necessary to say that where a consump?
tive person exposes himself to frequent colas,
bo ls certain to die shortly. Therefore, my
advice is, go well down into the State, ont bf
the reach of prevailing East winda and fogs.
Jacksonville, or almost any other of th., lo?
calities I have named, will benefit thoso who
are troubled with a torpid liver, a disordered
stomach, deranged bowels, sore throat or
cough, but for those whose lungs are diseased

In Florida, nearly everybody is using
Schonck's Mandrake Fills, for the olimate is
moro likely to prodnce bilious habits than
moro Northern latitudes. It is a well estab?
lished fact that natives of Florida rarely die
of cent- um pt ion, especially those of the South?
ern part. On tho other hand, in New Eng?
land, one-third, at least, of tho population
dio of this terrible disease. In the Hiddle
States it does not prevail BO' largely, still
thoro are many thousands of oases there.
What a vast per cent ago of lifo would be saved
if consumptives wore as easily alarmed in re?
gard to taking fresh cold as they are about
scarlet fevor, small-pox, Ao. But they are
not. They tako what they term a little cold,
which they are credulous enough to believe
will wear off in a few days. They pay no at?
tention to it, and bonce it lays the foundation
for another and another still, until tho lungs
are diseased beyond all hope for cure.
My advice to persons whoBe lungs are
affected even slightly ie, to lay in a stock of
Schonck's Pulmonic Syrup, Sohenok's Seaweed
Tonic and Schonck's Mandrake Pills and go
to Florida. I recommend these particular
medicines because I am thoroughly acquaint?
ed with their action. I know that where they
are used in strict accordance with my direc?
tions, they will do tho work tbat ls required.
This accomplished, nature will do the rest.
Tho physician who prescribes for cold, cough
or night-sweats, and then advises the patient
to walk or rido out every day, will be sure to
have a corpso on his hands before long.

cept in some casca where a freer uso of tho
Mandrako Pills is necessary. My object ls to
give tone to tho stomach-to get up a good
appotito. It is always a good sign whon a
patient begins to grow hungry. I have hopea
of Buch. With a relish for food and the
gratification of that relish comes good blood,
and with it more flesh, which is olosely fol?
lowed by a healing of tho langs. Then the
cough loosens and abates, the creeping chills
and clammy night-sweats no longer prostrate
and annoy, ami thc patient gets well, provid?
ed he avoids taking cold.
Now t nero aro many consumptives who have
not tho means to go to Florida. The question
may be asked, is thoro no hope for each?
Certainly there is. My advioe to such is. and
ever has been, to stay in a warm room daring
the wintor, with a temperature of about
seventy degrees, whioh should be kept
regularly at that point, by means of a ther?
mometer. Let such a patient take bis ex?
ercise within tho limits of tho room by walk?
ing up and down as much as bis strength will
permit, in order to keep up a healthy circula?
tion of tho blood. I have cured thousands
by this system, and oan do so again. Con?
sumption is as easily cured as any other
disoaso, if takon in timo, and the proper kind
of treatment is pursued. Tbe fact stands
undisputed on record that Schonck's Pulmo?
nic Syrup, Maudrako Fills, and Seaweed Tonio
have cured very many of what seemed to be
hope loss cases of consumption. Go where
you will, you will bo almost certain to find
some poor consumptive who has been rescued
from tho very jaws of death by their ase.
So far as tho Mandrake Pills are concerned,
everybody should keep a supply of them on
hand. They act on the liver netter than calo*
mel, and leave none of its hurtful effects be?
hind. In fact, they are excellent in all caaes
where a purgative medicine is required. It
you bavo partaken too freely of fruit and
diarrhoea ensues, a dose of tho Mandrakes
will euro you. If you are subject to sick
headache, take a dose of the MaodrakeB and
they will relievo you in two hours. If you
would obviate tho effect of a change of water,
or tho too free indulgence in fruit, take
one of tho Mandrakes overy night or every
tither night, and you may then drink water
and oat watermelons, pears, apples, plumo,
poaches or corn, without the risk of being sick
by them. They will proteot those who five in
damp situations against chilla and fevers.
Try them. They are perfectly harmless.
